Just had the air con regassed and it evacuated only 467gms so it certainly needed the job doing. No leaks found and refilled with the full amount of gas.
When the car was brought to the front of the garage I noticed the electric air con fan was running. Having owned the car for almost a month now and never hearing the fan I thought this was odd. As the garage had been testing the system they had it set on 16 degrees so I turned up to 22 and drove home 12 miles. When I pulled up on the drive the fan was still running.
I switched off the snow flake button and the fan stopped. Once switched back on the fan started up again. Switch off engine and fan stops. Switch back on and fan starts up again.
I always drive with the air con on auto and the temp set at 22 degrees and prior to the re-charge have never heard the fan.
Any ideas and is it coincidence that the fan is now coming on or should I return to the garage for investigation.
It was a proper Bosch centre so not any of the national tyre type chains

Re: Air Con Fan
On my X5 if the Green light is on-on the snow flake button= the fan we'll be running and if it's off it won't be.
I hope that helps
On all air conditioning, if the pressure is too low (needs a recharge) then the air conditioning pump will not run even if you see the green light on, the electric fan is part of this system.
These days you can buy your own recharge canister on eBay, make sure you get the right gas for your system.

Cheers Powercat.
What a difference a day makes. The fan was running at full speed all the time but today it's only running at slow speed when the air con button is on. When it's off it switches the fan off.
There's lovely cool air coming out now so all is once again well with the world.
Understand about the pressure being too low but according to the guy I bought the car from (BMW Indy) it would have to drop below 100gm's to stop the pump. There are also 3 speeds on the fan and it will come on when the air is switched on. How hot the outside temp is will depend on what speed the fan runs at.

I would advise against these as they rely on pressure and not on weight......it is very easy to overfill the system and risk blowing something
