.......And mine is in Tuesday morning.

For the third year in a row it's done over 10k miles. Normal (for me) use resumes now, my regular 600 mile round-trips are finally a thing of the past.

Two minor advisories - rear pads getting low, and small amount of play in both steering rack inner ends.

Well managed to get there yesterday well wrapped up as still not well.
Car had it's 21st MOT and passed with no advisories.
I know it is only 20 years old but they tend to get the extra test when changing hands.

Not a BMW, but my second favourite brand, wife's Subaru.

It was MOTd last week at an ATS facility, passed but three advisories, NSF CV gaitor, OSR CV gaitor both seriously deteriorated and battery tested 'weak'

Took it to its usual indy Subaru specialist this morning. ALL the gaitors are absolutely fine, the battery is OK but decided to replace it based on age and his recommendation.

No surprises really but I despise lying toe rags trying to con me for work not needed.

Strangely enough the only issue we’ve ever had was with ATS who flagged the E46 for bushes on the front suspension arms. Went elsewhere to a BMW specialist who like you said there was nothing wrong with them. That was ten years ago, didn’t come up again until last year at which point they were replaced. Never went near ATS again.

One of my current team got failed for bad headlight beam and was told the bill would be £800. Autoglym kit, power tool and an hour or so of time later job done. Took the car back and it passed first time. Their excuse? We don’t offer a polishing service as our ‘expert’ is too busy! Sounds like BMW? Nope Kia.

These are the sort of ‘value add’ extras that make me so wary of the motor trade. If that had happened to me now I would be reporting ATS to the relevant MOT test authority, with photos, for investigation. Some 700 MOT testers have lost their permits over the last two years. That to me says a lot!

I could get the indy to photograph the gaitors but I recall well reporting an issue with a Subaru Forester i bought with a one week old ticket which i discovered had a rotten front subframe. DVLA or DVSA? whomever weren't interested at all

It was part of the MOT. Their choice to drum up business or a requirement i dont know. No mention of battery testing on mine just a few weeks ago. Call me cynical and you'd be right.

The battery test is not part of the MOT. The only checks are:

Defect
(a) A battery insecure:
(i) but not likely to fall from carrier: Minor
(ii) and likely to fall from carrier or cause a short circuit: Major
(b) A battery leaking Major

Definitely some dodgy practice going on. That subframe should have failed and DVSA should have shown more interest IMHO.

Testing batteries sounds a bit of a cheek bit like your wipers and brake pads are worn as most don't know how worn they are, ie 5% worn

I was pi$$ed with the DVSA but they flatly refused to even challenge the test centre, which was local to me and the car seller at the time. So i did and was met with a blunt rude response. The car was only a few 000s but rot such as I've shown could hardly be missed. Conclusion, dodgy ticket.

ATS conclusion, shafters for the gullible or less cynical than myself
