I absolutely agree, in my opinion every one of these new cartoon grill BMWs look bloody awful. Oddly they will still sell though.

Huge "statement" non-functional grilles, huge vents, usually non-functional. All modern cars, not just BMW, are way too far OTT.

I've been trying hard to recall an American pick-up/van this monstrous front reminds me of.

They’re not exactly pretty are they. The ones on the i4 do at least do something as the bottom 1/3rd is louvres for the radiator (even BEVs need cooling systems) and hold a couple of radar sensors but I’m sure the designers could have gone for something a lot neater. The iX is bad enough but the new 7-series version is huge!
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
