Ok new gasket set arrived this morning ..I cleaned everything as best as i could .i did notice that on the inlet manifold which is a two piece construction ( top and bottom section) right on the end the seam apeared to be very slightly parted I think this is just the way it was assembled i couldnt get any movemet even with a g clamp but to be absolutly sure i ran some arralidite along the seam to be sure ..I replaced all vacum hoses with silicon and ive reasembled everything .I left all the new parts on it that I brought except the after mkt EGR just didnt like it .so I used the original after a good clean and check .( mighty vac ) .cleared all codes and went for a drive ..NO codes came up and there was no hestation or miss fire at low revs .car appears to be driving as it should .Im going to go for a 30 mile run up the A24 give me chance to give a bit of a welly on a straight road .ive got half a tank of diesal .so fingers crossed will up date later ..

well now Im confussed ..started car had orange eml quick code read p1286 ?? cleared then took it for 30 mile drive had a couple of lovely black clouds as pulling away from rounabout ..cleared pretty quick and car is pulling like a train upto 90 no issues .dropped down to 60 ish temp is bank on dead centreon gauge and car drives and handles well .no eml .got back turned car off and back on ..eml stays on p1286 ?? done a quick google knock sensor ??? looks like ive more to do ..

Have you for the BMW error code as P1286 is a generic and unknown in the code list here:

There are multiple references elsewhere to a fuel/air ratio error. That could be related to the MAF.

ok thank you for that Im going to plug in my laptop and see if inpa can give me a better or more acurate code ..i was sort of expecting a code for the swirl flaps ...they were removed before i got the car but the control unit and the vacum pump was left on ..i removed the vacum pump and blocked off vac pipe but left the control unit fitted as ive heard that needs to be mapped out ...so maybe the code is just telling me the pump isnt opperating ??? if its the pump then ill fit an extended vac hose to the control unit and just mount the pump out of the way for now to test and see rather than refitting .

well no luck here cant get inpa to work ..ive checked all the settings ( comm port 1) all the usual stuff says the lead is connected but nothing maybe a dodgy lead god knows its worked before ..any way Ive got torgue pro as well but that just gives me the 1286 code so no nearer to sussing it out . maybe a new lead but im getting to the stage where i keep buying stuff and getting no-where .

okey another up date ..code p1286 on bmw x3 2.0d e83 = 41E2 exhaust gas recirculation actuator control when useing INPA ..which im guessing is the egr solinoid which i did replace so im going to swap the new one for the old one and see what i get .fingers crossed again .

below is the fault as per INPA in german and translated to english but where i go from here is floating in the ether because ive not got a clue any more seem to be going round in circles .

exhaust gas recirculation control, control deviation. exhaust gas recirculation bank 1 low throughput detected.
luftmasse zu hoch/negative regellabweichung testbedingungen nochnichterfullt fehlermomentun vorhanden und bereitsgespeichert fehler wurde das aufleuchten einer warnlampeverursachen
air mass too high/negative control deviation test conditions not yet met error present and already saved error would cause a warning lamp to light up

Take it to a specialist indy dealer, got to be worth investing in a full pro scan now.

4501 relates to exhaust gas recirculation....EGR, MAP, MAF......you did say the MAP sensor you replaced was generic...if its from china then I would punt on that. You shouldnt have had that black smoke when you put your foot down....unless there's no DPF present.

Ok update have finally cured all problems ..the code p1286 equates to code 41E2 abgasruekfuchrsteller,ansteuerung Exhaust gas recirculation actuator, control..( egr solinoid ) ..going back over all that Ive done in the last couple of months .I now believe I actually cured the original fault at the begining ..but because of my own over cautiousness I replaced parts that I could get to whilst I could believeing this would save time .I infact introduced extra problems 1 the damaged gasket ( this had to be done as I had removed manifold ) 2 fitting a new solinoid .the EGR problem (fault code 4501) was obviously caused by loss of pressure from inlet manifold . once I had cured this I got the 1286 code but that has is stated earlier is a generic code that can send you all around the planet ..it was only when i got a replacement k-dcan cable and had INPA running correctly that i got the 41E2 code pointing directly to the EGR solinoid I swapped it back out and put in the original ..cleared all codes and the car has done over 500 miles since that includes a few short Drives and one of over 50 miles straight ..multiple starts and stops ..ive tried to upload copy of inpa diagnostic print out but it wont let me .I believe I got the cloud of black smoke because i was running with egr unplugged at one point ..im getting no codes or problems with DPF .Im going to run a professional fuel system cleaner through it just as a back up ..if any body else has similer probs i hope putting down my experiances helps them out and I m quite willing to answer any questions if i can .

Glad you’ve got there at last. I think more than a few of us have inadvertently caused other issues accidentally and ended up chasing our own tails. I know I have!

Hi everyone Just to update ..the car has now done a few miles since i did the work includeing 820 mile trip to okehampton in dartmoor .and back no problems at all .in all the problem has cost me about £300 in parts ..and proberbly about 50+ hrs of labour .but christ only knows what that would equate to if id taken it to BMW ..Maybe they would have solved it quicker and less parts .but even if it had taken them 5 hrs to solve it still would of cost alot more in £££s ..It did give me head ache for a while but Im feeling alot better about the whole experiance and a bit of self pride .now for the MOT

You could probably add at least another ‘0’ before the decimal point and one or two digits up from ‘3’ for BMW working on the car. Around here main dealer prices are well north of £200/hr +VAT with Indies around £100/hr inc VAT.
