E39 just as good but a bit smaller. Best built BMW I've owned, still miss it.

Saw a LWB E38 on eBay a few months ago. It looked very nice £7k iirc, but need a serious garage to home one of them🤔

E53 subframe bushes are vulnerable with age. A lot of work DIY or a lot of money in a workshop.

Some have stripped it completely, powder coated and replaced all the bushes, theres quite a few, extending its life measurably. Had my E53 ten years, longest I've owned anything, cost a lot of wonga over those years though.

Funny you should say that I bought a full subframe everything with out the diff £200 I have had it powder coated it looks lovely in my lock up but as you say big job to do so that why tested the one on vehicle with a hammer it should be good for a few years give me time to completely refurbish the spare as am like you I keep car’s to long …. But at least you know what you’ve got…😂

Hi I changed the mechatronic seals easy to do when the pan is off but it took a thousand miles to learn my driving style I reset and followed all the steps to relearn the gearbox now it is good but I had to lower my expectations as it is nearly 20 years old but am fussy 😂 it’s the seals that fixes the lurch….👍

If you do change the rear subframe be prepared to change the brake lines that will be exposed when it’s off. Disconnect at a joint and cap it off to prevent fluid loss. Can be a nightmare to bleed If you let the brake fluid run out.

Cheers my lines have been done before 👍the old girl just flew through a MOT subframe looking a lot better since I knocked the crust off and coated with lanoguard …but my turbo has just gone so you never get much time before something else goes…. The joys off older BMW’s…..😂
