2010 E70 X5 3.0d - No Drive
Hi
Had the rear drive shafts replaced yesterday by garage as a CV joint was failing. The nuts holding them on were very corroded so it took some effort to get them out of the hubs.
Change a number of bushes and control arms.
Drove it last night and all ok, drove this morning and started to lose drive, the following faults have come up:
- 6EBD - EMF error: can not be put on; SLSII 00 (DSC: EMF: interface)
I looked online, pulled fuses, pulled the release cable. Also did error message reset no change.
Ran the codes again and got the following:
- 6EBD - EMF error: can not be put on; SLSII 00 (DSC: EMF: interface)
- 6031 - Mech_manual_moved
Has the garage not replaced the parking brake properly when removing the drive shafts?

Thats something up with the parking brake with those codes, reset the codes and try this : hold the park brake lever down 5 seconds, release 1 second. that resets the parking brake.

Just had a look underneath, driver side drive shaft has popped out diff side....

reused the old circlip maybe that's all holds it in I seen it on a 5 series before we had it in drive but going nowhere they it got towed and once it came of towtruck it drove fine again for about 1 mile then popped out again

E70 shafts should all be the same length. It’s possible it just wasn’t ‘snapped’ home. There’s a warning in the TIS that it must be a positive and clearly audible ‘click’ and if there are any difficulties needing excess pressure then it’s not lined up correctly (or the splines are damaged/twisted - unlikely in your case). Did they change the inner seal by any chance? If so they come with a special plastic guard piece that protects the seal lip and that has to be snapped off (it has two break-points moulded in) before fitting the shaft fully back in.

What does a two pound coin and a rear drive shaft c-clip have in common? Jack S***! (Tired to post photo, but it wants a link?)
Got the micrometre out to measure stepped shaft diameters and lengths of stepped sections, all matched up with the original, except the new one which was 0.35mm longer (A midgies....). Head scratch time
Turns out the c-clip on the end of the shaft looked nothing like the original one rotated easily around the shaft and was not 'stiff' enough to lock the drive shaft in the diff.
Used one from original drive shaft and just completed 300 miles drive

At least it’s sorted, and that tolerance isn’t bad. The ‘C’ clip was the issue by the sound of it. Can you name the part manufacturer so everyone knows to avoid? Not wanting to stir things up, just forum knowledge based on experience.
