Tyre sizes

Post by Nightsman33 » Sun Apr 24, 2022 5:16 am

Hi guys

After reading a few forums i see it seems to be very important to have same size tyres front and rear on the E53 somthing to do with the transfer box.

My tyres are 19s but different profile also all 4 are brand new tyres but different make as couldnt get 4 of the same brand at the same at the time i was there.
Is this an issue. Many thanks

It is accepted practice that it is always advisable to run the same make with the same tread pattern and depth on all four corners.

The different profile is because of the wider rears and here BMW approved tyres have a ☆ on the sidewall. The fronts and rears though different sizes have been radius matched for BMW use..

Many people ignore this on older cars and I believe the E53 isn't as susceptible as the E70/71 in suffering transmission problems if non approved tyres are fitted. If I were you I'd be looking the get the same make and tread type all round. Many tyre sellers know this but aren't obliged to tell those who don't know. I'd go back to where you bought them and "have a word",

It isn't just BMW awd that need careful tyre selection it is just about all of them.Your 19" wheels should be staggered needing fronts to be 255x55x19R and rear 285x45x19R
To check how good a match you have park on level ground make a chalk mark at the bottom of the front and rear tyres roll forward 2 or 3 revolutions both marks should be in the same position if not you will have a problem with Transmission wind up. Transfer case or Diff damage will follow.
As Saphireblack has said the right tyres will be cheaper than repairs to the drive train.

If they are the right size and all new they should be fine as they will be fairly close in rolling radius :D You have bought them now so it doesn't really make sense to be changing them again especially if you couldn't find 4 the same brand first time round

I've been around BMW X cars since 2007, they still scare me with their complexity and ability to cost small, sometimes large fortunes to maintain.

Breaks My Wallet is one of several analogies.

The youngest e53 is 16 years old now so things are gonna break some time I wouldn't worry too much about it plenty still going yet :driving:

Dealer prices are mad everywhere! An auto transmission specialist will be able to change the fluids and yes a good Indy with BMW knowledge would be better, however see if there is a ZF service centre in reasonable striking distance.

How close are you to Caerleon because there’s a highly rated Indy there (Autotech), otherwise it’s Dragonauto in Bridgend. I don’t have experience of either, but there might be some member on here that has.
