2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Strange Noise

Post by Sm[]key » Sat Mar 26, 2022 8:32 pm

Hi

Changed my alternator today after it died 60 miles into a 300 mile drive :headbang:

Fitted the alternator after realising I couldn't get it off without removing the radiator fan cowl, did a error code reset, and started up the engine to hear this noise:

Does anyone know what this is?

Is the belt new sounds like its occuring at belt speed ? Was the recall for the tensioner bolt done as they can fail and take everything out ? There is a little hose that clips into the fan surround make sure its clipped back in and not rubbing on the belt .

Belt isn't new, was replaced less than a year ago.

When was the tensioner recall? I got the car December 2020.

Thanks, I'll check the hose tomorrow, I don't remember clipping it in?

Had a little look under bonnet this morning, looks to be coming from the EGR valve. Unplugged the small hose going to it and the noise stopped.

Will investigate further later when Mother's Day has passed ....

I'm not sure now but after that I think I'd check with the dealer see if it was done as if that bolt breaks it will cause a lot of damage.

A vacuum hose may have split while you were in at tha alternator, they get brittle with heat and age and they are along the side of the alternator along the block.

Hose had almost relocated itself, I push it back in. Nothing was rubbing against the belts.

Did an error code check today nothing found, daylight prevented any further investigation.

Looking online the duck quack noise is the EGR actuator.

Guessing I will need to take the inlet manifold off to have a look?

Did anyone spot the open ended hose at the start of the video? Surely this can't be right unless its an overflow?

Think you can take the egr off without manifold but it's a little tricky to access one of the bolts. Best have a look on utube for a guide. I don't think much usually goes wrong other than getting clogged up inside.

A guick Google suggests it may not be the egr but the egr pressure converter is leaking ,lives underneath the manifold .trying to pinpoint the noise with a piece of tubing may help. Will be a lot cheaper than a new egr valve.

You could buy a cheap stethoscope on Amazin to pinpoint it too?

Took the inlet manifold off today, I needed to replace glow plugs 1 & 2 so did some investigating.

Found quite a bit of oily residue all over the hoses and pressure actuator, checked all hoses and all ok.

Suprisingly the nuts holding down the manifold weren't very tight, I'm guessing this is the cause of the oily mess.

Lifting the inlet manifold off was an experience.....it seemed stuck at cylinder 6 end, turns out after using a mirror the injector cable loom was tie wrapped to the inlet manifold? Genius use of a cable tie! :tumbleweed: Took some time to manipulate cable snips to release it...

Took apart the EGR valve, nothing to note.

Put it all back together and powered the car back up.......still quack quack!

Will get a pressure actuator ordered and try replacing that.

Still not received my replacement pressure actuator from AutoDoc....

Driven around 900 miles since the quacking and still quacking, started getting non responsive throttle today, blip the throttle and the turbo would kick in and the engine accelerate. Instantly thought a MAF problem from past experience with other cars, couple hundred miles later 3FF0 Air Mass Meter fault is thrown up.

Would my quacking problem screw up the MAF? I'm guessing when I take off the inlet manifold everything is gonna need a good clean.
