Hi my car is a 2011 bmw x5 40d. Just wondering if anyone has ever had egr issues with the following fault codes.
40D4, 4B82, 4C9E, 4C9F.
The garage have fitted a brand new egr valve but it just keeps throwing up the same 4 fault codes every time. The garage is now saying they think it's because the car needs a software update. Thanks

40D4 seems to refer to the EGR pressure valve having an issue with either a leak or non functioning.

4B82 gives this:

Fault text
DDE: Exhaust-gas recirculation-rate control, control
deviation: Exhaust-gas recirculation rate too low/positive
control deviation

Action in service
Check the following potential problem sources:
Mass airflow system on engine-side of compressor is leaking.
Leak in exhaust system upstream from turbine.
Defective boost pressure actuator/exhaust turbocharger (in combination with errors related to the boost pressure
actuator).
Defective EGR valve (in combination with EGR valve errors).
Throttle valve defect (in combination with throttle valve faults).
Severe EGR cooler soot accumulation. Applies to engines with single-stage boost: Conduct mass
airflow system test.

Fault effect and breakdown warning
Proceed to the nearest BMW Service facility.

Error 4C9E & 4C9F both come back with a common cause: EGR Valve sticking/jammed

Sounds like the garage need to check all the pipes are clean as well as the EGR actually working. Might be a bad one or incorrectly installed.

Hi thanks for your reply. The car was initially in the garage for turbo and dpf issues. It has been back to the garage 4 times since the initial repair was done because of issues with the egr valve. Since they replaced the egr valve the car hasn't actually broke down on me any more. But it does bring the cel light on and flash on the dash that the car will have limited power although the car still has all its power. The only other issue that I am aware of is glow plugs 1 and 4 are both faulty. I am at approximately £4000 on repair bills now and the car still isn't right. The garage have now told me that there is nothing else they can do and have advised i take it to bmw because they think it needs a software update

Two faulty glowplugs will stop the DPF from regenerating. The system uses them to raise the exhaust gas temperature high enough to allow the DPF to burn the soot. If you don’t get those (and the controller) fixed you’ll be back where you started with DPF faults. Unless all the pipework around the EGR was properly cleaned out you may have gas flow issues due to soot. They might equally have damaged something so there’s a leak.

I can’t see how a software update will fix anything. These are all reporting sensor or actuator issues and all can be found with a simple on line search.

For that much money I’d be demanding a fix or money back. BMW will charge you about £100 for diagnostics and £200+/hr plus parts and VAT. They’ll be able to tell you if it needs a software update probably by reading your car key.

Yeah it has just had the glow plug module replaced. That's how we found out the 2 glow plugs were faulty. Unfortunately the tip is missing from the glow plug on cylinder 1 and the glow plug on cylinder 4 is just going loose and then tightening back up all the time. The garage quoted between £2500 and £3000 to remove the head and fix that issue so I am trying to find a different alternative at the moment. I was hoping i could get to the bottom of the egr valve without spending much more money thanks again for your help.

I had two broken glowplugs on mine and the parts were removed with a special kit - costs about £50 - without any need to remove the head. The work was done by an Independent with all ex-BMW staff in Milton Keynes. The kit is specifically designed to recover the broken bits so the head stays in place. These kits are easy to get and a commonly used thing.

I don’t remember anyone on here with broken plugs needing major engine surgery. It might have been the way in the 20th Century, but no longer.

All six plugs, new controller, repair kit and labour was £800 inc. VAT.. It would have been around half that without the breakages.

The little flexi pipe from the manifold to egr might be split so not much egr gas getting to egr valve , worth a check :D

between exhaust manifold and egr cooler , look to left of egr cooler for soot which would indicate a leak of gases :D

Hi just a quick update on my situation. With the issues with glow plugs and egr I decided to get a dpf and egr delete. Now within 200 miles of driving it broke down on me again. Tried to start several times after but was just turning over and not actually staring. I locked the car up and returned about 30 minutes later with a recovery truck any for the car to start back up. After reading fault codes they 8 new codes showed up which were.
4986, 49EF, 4207, 4206, 49EF, 4258, 4590, 48F5.
Could these be linked in anyway to my initial egr fault or the deletes I have had done, Thanks

First one looks to be glow plug controller, last 2 look to be fuel pressure, the rest oxygen sensor-related.

Hi thanks for your reply, do you know if the codes for the oxygen sensor could be causing the other faults to appear. Some of the other faults are down as being absent now so u presume that's why the car starts again now
