2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Inside Rear Tyre Wear
2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Inside Rear Tyre Wear
Rear passenger side tyre has excessive inner wear, looking at the back wheels from the rear it would seem this wheel has a greater camber.
Took back to tyre shop as though they hadn't aligned the wheels correctly, they are claiming its not the alignment.
What's likely to have gone to have caused this? Air suspension is ok and new.

Have you had the car checked with a Hunter type (laser) 4-wheel alignment rig? If not then the tyre shop probably won’t have found any errors. 2-wheel systems are wrong for the setups on these cars (they’re AWD after all) and even new from the factory, many came out right on the extremities of the spec rather than where they should be. Might be worth getting a check done at a local specialist. Search for ‘Hunter’ laser alignment specialists around you.

I did and they were a mile out, back to the tyre dealer for a new set of rears!
Re: 2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Inside Rear Tyre Wear
What is left on the front's.

About 15-20k wear.
I personally think when I asked for a 4 wheel alignment when I got 4 new tyres they only aligned the fronts, the rears were visibly out with hindsight.

Be careful fitting just one new pair. If the tread depth difference is more than 1.5mm you are risking the transfer box or differential. These transmissions cannot cope with a large tread difference and you get transmission wind-up.

Are there any bushes would need replaced in the rear if inside wear on rear tyres is excessive ?

Hope you gets yours resolved fairly quickly, it appears to be one of the weaknesses of the x5, probably not helped by big wheels and small run flat tyres, not to mention the condition of the roads
My x5 (f15) just back from a full service and mot and no advisories or recommendations from service advisor on collection, noticed yesterday that rear near side tyre wear is reported as uneven, 4.5 mm outside, 5mm centre and 6mm inside!, not what I expected to see, and potentially expensive.
It is booked in for a Hunter 4 wheel laser alignment tomorrow with a local alignment specialist tomorrow. I am going to ask them to recheck and confirm all the tyres depths as well, to see what the options are on changing as other rear is stated as even at 5.5 and the fronts at 5.5 and 7, so just within bmw tolerance if you take the centres or average depth, but will see what the real numbers are first

Item 2 in the picture is normally at fault if the excessive tyre wear can’t be brought to within tolerance. To check the bearing the suspension must’ve fully unloaded.

Thanks Henry, that looks a fairly complex design with a reasonably easy fix.

are they runflats or ordinary tyres , most never check tyre pressures which is one of the main reasons for heavy inner rear tyre wear , if its ordinary tyres the pressures must be about 5 psi higher I found to get a reasonable mileage , remember runflats can stand up with no air ordinary tyres cannot so it make sense they need more air

4 wheel alignment done, all errors adjusted out, so just need to keep a very close eye in tread depths hopefully I will see the wear even out on the one tyre and all will be well again. Ordered a decent tread gauge which should arrive on Sunday, so will start to track tread depths monthly. The Hunter 4 wheel alignment is a very clever bit of kit.Wayfarer wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 5:52 pm Hope you gets yours resolved fairly quickly, it appears to be one of the weaknesses of the x5, probably not helped by big wheels and small run flat tyres, not to mention the condition of the roads

It is a clever bit of kit but only as good as the operator

Very true, the operator looked competent and they have a good reputation locally, and he is pretty well booked up a month in advance, so fingers crossed, but I’ll keep a very close eye on the tyres for uneven wear, certainly drives better and feels more planted now they have been done.
