Oil level uncertainty

Post by Colw1 » Sun Aug 22, 2021 3:47 pm

Hi I’ve just Donne a oil level check on the car and it looks ok but I’m uncertain if it should be right at the top of the scale or at the top of the next section down
Hopefully this is explained better in the picture added
Cheers col

On my F25 if the level goes above where yours is the top bar is red. I assume that means over-full.
IMHO yours is spot-on.

Looks spot on to me too. On my X6, the dipstick says low, but the iDive looks like yours.

Thanks for the responses I tend to think that the extra block is to say it’s overfilled

I should have added "if I recall correctly". I only ever saw it the first time I did an oil change and went by the dipstick, and that was 3 years ago. Every change I've done since I've put 7ltrs in and kept adding 250ml at a time until I got to the top of the central bar on the display.

On mine, when it pings up with check oil level, I add 1 bottle (1 litre???) and that takes it to the full mark as shown on the picture.

Still prefer the old dipstick but i am old lol.
To me a sensor can fail or play up a dipstick can't lie.

But when a dipstick somewhere within BMW decided not to fit a dipstick, you're kind of buggered :(

I thought the tube was still fitted and a dipstick was an extra.

You mean this one: Right side of engine towards the back. I know mine is the N57 engine but I thought that they all had one, even if BMW didn’t make it obvious or mention it anywhere.

RealOEM says there should be one on the E70 & E71 from start of production, and for all engines - but there have been persistent rumours that certain models didn’t have one!

Shock horror my M340d (allegedly) has a temperature gauge! It doesn’t however have things like an oil pressure gauge, or voltmeter. I know I’m old fashioned but those gauges gave an early indication of trouble, or at least warned the wise to investigate why the indications were varying from norm. It’s a bit too late when a red light comes on!!

Less is less imo.

My older 2005 Touareg has oil temp, water temp and a voltmeter. It is reassuring to have them.

I'll look again on the X6 when I'm back in the UK. Is there a known part number for the dipstick or is the black 'knob' it?

You must remember that people like you lot who actually look at gauges are a dying breed. You want pre warning that you may have a problem, how antiquated. :driving:
