Blower

Post by pcdee » Mon Jul 26, 2021 9:35 pm

Hi all

My blower has stopped working all of a sudden. If I put it on max I can feel a very slight breeze.

From what I read on other forums it may be the blower or FSU or the fan blower resistor.

No errors come up on the dash and I scanned with Carley which came up with no errors either.

What are your views??

Thanks

Many, if not all blower issues are the FSR (final stage resistor) as i know it failing. In my E39/E53 era these were known as hedgehogs iirc. They were located drivers side footwell high up on the rear centre console area. Id wager their location is similar in later models.

Certainly a DIY job but also fiddly, awkward and the ability to bend unnaturally is an advantage.

No reference to such a beastie on the E70, or in the AC parts list. There is a blower controller mounted on the rear of the blower though. Access means taking the glovebox & DVD player (if fitted) out.

Also worth checking the fuses as there are 6 listed for the climate fans!
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Thanks for the advice guys, it was the blower regulator. It's behind the glove box and attached to the blower. Took about 45mins with lots of F & C words.
It's awkward to take out and put back in and if you got back problems I'd stay clear.
I've attached the part in question for future references should anyone need one.

BMW may have replaced the hedgehog and called it something else but they seem to be consistent in placing it somewhere awkward.

Shame its still a pain to get to , having changed 3 on an e46 over the years they were a nightmare to change and you needed to be a contortionist :headbang:

A m8 bought am x3 last week.
He came round last night saying he had fitted a new battery but that one had gone flat (did ask if it was round when he fitted it).
I said hedgehog first port of call anything funny happening with the blower and he said yes they don't work most of the time but that is another problem i just said is it.
He went home to lookup FSR hedgehog.
