Just been recovered after the front belt shredded itself.
Looks like a coolant leak via water pump has caused it.
Got new pump and belt already on order due in tomorrow.
Anyone have any tips for this change out?
Thanks

X5 E70 3.0d - Front Belt Failure
Re: X5 E70 3.0d - Front Belt Failure
The plot thickens with the root cause of this issue...
Cracked EGR Thermostat flange cause of my initial coolant leak, appears to have written off my Water Pump and belt!
Under the covers is a wright mess created by this leak!

Heavy handed with a spanner over tight = crack.
You must have been losing water for some time ?.

Only had the car since December, had a squeaky water pump for a couple of weeks so put it down to that.
Pump changed out and new belt fitted, next problem getting the AC Belt back on!

This help?
Looks like you need something to stretch the belt slightly to get it over the pulley?
Bottom comment states to refit the old belt the same way around as it came off.

I do like Amazon Prime, emergency tools needed to sort car, both delivered next day.
Needed a socket to fit the bizarre crank arrangement, 4off male torqx bolts. Then a magnetic stretch tool to fit the stretch belt. Ridiculous design with a Steeler mentality!
All sorted and just completed a 300 mile drive....sleep.

i had the same "root cause" issue though any further damage wasnt done as leak was a bit more and made car to report temperature is too high, so checked and replaced EGR coolant valve. looks like its common fault or life of these valves snapping at exactly same spot.
thermostat, water pump and belts were also ordered as preventive measure, will do when get some time.
