Witter detachable towbar.

Post by Murphybarnes » Fri Apr 02, 2021 7:40 pm

Never had a key for this so ordered from Replacement key company. Doesn't fit. I assume this is the right code.
Witter codes start with TR on their site but barrel code is ACS...soaked in WD40 but anyone familiar with what the right code should be please.

I had an identical problem last year. From memory blue colour locks do have TR codes, mine did. I wasn't aware of a black version but the close up certainly shows an ACS code. I found Witters etched codes illegible so couldnt get replacement keys.

Two keys from Witter were £20, a complete new assembly was around £30. Easier to replace the whole thng if proving difficult. My solution as i dont need the security of the lock was to drill it out. Its just as flexible to use but obviously does now lack any security.

I'd send your images to Witter and seek their help.

My sisters lad had this problem.
He bought the twist bit with lock and keys of ebay (£15 i think).
Video on a google search showed him how to do it.
Now he is frightened of spanners in case the jaws bite he is not sure witch end you hold.
So if he can do it it must be easy.

Witter will tell you how to remove the complete lock assembly if you buy a replacement from them, it involves a pin located under the sticker iirc

This may also be on YouTube :)

Yes a pin rings a bell from when he did his and the whole thing comes off.
Can't remember the type name but it has a split down the length of it

Had a look on youtube seems the lock isn't very secure if you can just remove the sticker and unscrew it :o Looks similar to the one I have fitted but mine is a brink.

I concluded that as it seems so easy to hijack the towbar with whatever is on it, i didnt bother with a new keyed lock. The detach mechanism works perfectly so i just fit it whenever it is rarely required.

The key company have been pretty decent seeing it was a fiver all in and next day delivery. I shall persevere.
