Turns out my run flats didn't have a slow puncture, the wheel had a crack in it caused potentially by a pot hole.

What is peoples experience with this?

Can anyone suggest more robust rims as I'm doing a lot of motorway miles..

Type 227 are known to be weak, very many crack.

You could look at a number of different factory styles. Types 336, 337, 214, 468, 469 seem to be crack resistant based on examples for sale, or maybe downsize to 19" for more tyre cushion.

Many ebayers advertise wheels for sale as suitable for X5 and X6. Be aware X6/E71 rear wheels do not fit the E70 rear axle.

Thanks for the advice, I will stick with what I've got for now making sure I avoid pot holes.

Cannot see how BMW get away with this, speaking with the tyre shop this is a common occurrence.

These wheels are clearly not fit for purpose!

In reality the problem is more likely to be the state of UK roads and lack of action by local councils together with 3rd party contracts that don’t always offer value for money as the repairs are often bad and break out again very quickly. The wheels all have to pass a testing standard - which they do - however our roads are possibly below the standard depending upon where you live. Around here they are pretty poor! Many motor manufacturers now test prototypes on UK roads because they are so poorly maintained.

Our E46 suffered severe wheel damage in a pothole on a wet night and despite trying to claim for it against the local authority it was denied as they said they weren’t aware so could not be liable. Annoying but hard to argue against.

Shallow-sidewalled runflat tyres on typically British badly maintained roads is the perfect recipe for cracked wheel disaster. I can't remember which model(s) and wheel design(s) were involved, but about 6 years ago BMWGB were taking back boat-loads of cracked wheels under warranty.

Yes I remember and also remember some of the brand new wheels they supplied did not pass the runout test they used to pass/ fail a crack warranty
