2005 3.0 D SMELL FROM CAR WHEN YOU STOP?

Post by richardmumford » Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:46 am

Can anyone please help?
i have a 2005 3.0d and havent owned the car for long and each time i get out the car i can smell a smoky burnt diesel type smell.
i took it into a main dealer they checked couldnt find anything but agreed it didnt smell right they said webasto was working ok however they think the smell is more from passenger side exhaust.other mechanics in the garage complained when it was ticking over in the garage as to the smell?
its had new air filter ,oil separator and oil change etc and does not smoke at all apart from a small puff of white when started in cold mornings which i believe is normal.
i have tried a fuel cleaning additive to see if this removed any built up carbons etc internally but doesnt seem to have helped.
strange thing is car drives beutifully and fuel consumption around town is 24 and on runs well over 30 mpg.

so not sure what to do next.

p.s. the smell does not come in the cabin even if sitting still.

I think that's just how the Webasto is. it's the exhaust fumes from it you are smelling.

How is it when the Webasto isn't running? The unit only runs for a little while at start up, and then only if the air temp is below 5C. Once the coolant warms up the unit shuts off. If it's running all the time that the ignition is on then it's faulty.

i thought it was normal for a 3.0D to smell a bit, is it not due to the cat?

It's probably a cracked exhaust manifold! Quite common on 3.0d! :fuelfire:
