Water leak past rear door X5 e70 plus seat dyed

Post by Leslie » Wed Sep 16, 2020 9:42 pm

On my X5 e70 when I open the rear doors after rain I get flood of water on the ground which is clearly building up between the inner and outer door seal , this is on both rear doors but unfortunately the passenger rear door is letting in water . I don't think it should be like this as there should be a means for it to escape as sooner or later it will find its way in ..The door drains are not blocked as I checked . When I had velour mats in it must have been soaking away and evaporating but with rubber ones now it stays in there under the mat which is not good !
I did read on here about someone who moved the the striker for the latch and that cured their's but of course that was too easy and hasn't fixed mine. Next port of call is take the door card off and see if the foam membrane is torn or has detached from the inner door skin and is letting water pass . The inner seal looks perfect with no damage and at first i just though it was compressed over time .
Has anybody had any success with resealing the foam to the door as I think new door seals are very expensive especially if they don't fix it

So I get this effect after washing the cars when you open the door and it pours out but not usually so much after just rain. As you've adjusted the striker/latch and that hasn't worked and the deals look good then definitely look at removing the doorcard and checking as that is the next most likely place.

Got this done today , did both rear doors and both foam membranes had separated at top and bottom and you could see water marks on the foam at the bottom where it was running down ( heavy rain last night ). I have resealed with butyl tape so we shall see how it goes .
It was cold out so I heated the doorcard and handle and surround with a hairdryer to make it easier to remove and less likely to break and this worked a treat , when putting it back on I had a plug in the light tube end above the door pocket( never even knew it was there, illuminates door packets wit red light) and it dangled it it and well don't do this  as it broke a little piece off but still works ok.

After that I got carried away and redyed the doorcard armrest on drivers door and the bolsters on the drivers seat then went whole hog and dyed the complete seat  The colour match is decent but wher parts had wore through to the bare leather the dye didn't really want to take till I started daubing it on a bit heavier , looks a lot better now and you could probably do all 4 seats with the little kit from colourlock , not the cheapest but seems good so far anyway. Has improved the look of the parts no end and the rest of my interior is mint anyway as I'm usually the only passenger.

After a sand and a bit of dye , pics before don't show shoulder bolster was down to bare leather near stitching, this was hard to cover again.Could do with a new mirror switch beige panel as the rubber coating has come off but the genuine ones are about 50 quid and the Chinese ones down have a hole for autofold . The rubber paint would probably work out more expensive than a new plastic ! I will buy a cheap Chinese passenger door handle back though as mine is all sticky the way they always go , for a tenner its worth a punt ...... :driving:

You’ve done a cracking job there Leslie. That leather looks well good. Hopefully you have sorted the water ingress as well.

Nice jobs there. Definitely looks like the butyl should do the trick after seeing the pics.

Leather looks much better.

I’ve noticed mine is doing the same as well but only on the passenger side.

Where did you get the butyl tape from and what size was it?

Many thanks in advance

Thanks lads had a look this morn and the shade is a bit darker in the morning light ,probably as mine has 11 years of fading and there is a little bit of patchyness on the opposite bolster where it only had 2 coats but it will be grand ,see how it wears .Need to get the protector on later today as you need to leave it 24 hrs before applying , might wait till tomorrow . :D
Couldn't feel any water on bottom of the doorskin this morn but the carpet will take a while to dry out before I know if its fixed or not, no flood over my feet though when I open the door as is often the case which is nice

b21plya I got the tape at least 10 years ago of ebay , its around 6mm or 1/4 inch wide wide and a little bit thinner on the flat part and anything around that size is just fine for the job ,it squishes down anyway.

Make sure the little rubber washers stay on the clips or those could introduce another leak , one of mine had stuck to the door then fallen of but I noticed it on the ground before refitting :D

Took door card off this evening and found about a 6-inch pet at the bottom wasn’t sealed. Ordered new butyl roll and will get it sorted. Thanks again pal

Sometimes it might be worth cleaning the door surfaces with Isopropyl Alcohol to clear any grease or residues etc. It shouldn’t damage the paint. The door liner needs a careful check though before applying such. It should be fine but test anyway.

I’ve used it to remove old stickers from cars in the past and never had a problem. We cleaned up an old Army Cadets minibus ready to be marked up for the RAF Air Cadets Squadron I was at a few years back and it did a great job.

I keep saying I’m going to buy some but never have. Can I use brake cleaner and let it dry?

Not sure. Depends upon what’s in it as a solvent. Test in an inconspicuous area as the saying goes.
