Shaking at 60mph - not tyres or balancing

Post by MarkX50 » Tue Jul 14, 2020 3:14 pm

Hey guys. As above it’s not the tyres so before I start pulling it apart I wondered if anyone else had a similar issue and resolved?

Basically at about 60-70 there is almost like a rattle or surge in the car. Feels like it’s in the seat but also through the wheel to some extent .... but it’s hard to say. When you break it comes in via the wheel stronger.

In addition I think I need the rocker cover replacing, plus I’m losing about a litre of coolant per 1k miles. Hoping that’s a simple fix - again any suggestions welcomed!!

Check for a sticking calliper unit. If any wheel is warmer than another at the hub, that’s your problem. Had to change one on the X6 a couple of years ago. It can also warp the disc :(

As X5sport mentioned...sticky caliper..or a warped disc as they expand when hot....

I found with mine that if I braked hard it went away for a little while (a few miles) before coming back. It was the offside front and the wheel centre was warmer than any other wheel. I did need to change the disc and pads so did both sides. All parts got from carparts4less. If it is the caliper you can also get rebuild kits if so inclined. Instructions for doing the job are all on newtis.info.

You say wheels and tyres balanced, are they new? If they have been checked did they check the rears?

Also worth checking the suspension bushes

Re the tyres and wheels, my local shop took them off last week, checked and rebalanced. I was booked in to buy a new set and they said it wasn’t needed.
