I did miss the speed and agility of a quick car, the X5 performed brilliantly, but you can't throw it around as much as a 330.
Wanna bet
Arrr, I see you have the 4.6! What a machine! and quicker 0-60 by 0.3secs than my 330i. But surely a bit of understeer with that big old V8 in the front!
I only had the 3.0 petrol, but I did find the limit a few times when going into a corner a bit hard!
Not bad for 2.2t
Good exercise holding on to the seat with your glutes If your not on the edge youre taking up too much space

Totally agree, I'm not saying its uncool, or for old men, (I love the X5, was gutted I had to sell it). Let me adjust my statement, 4x4s are more the 40ish demographic, purely down to space and practicality (families). Within the world of 4x4s the X5 is probably the the most young at heart, so I guess that brings it down to mid 30s! (I want my X5 back)!
I still won't be ready for another one for a few years, so I guess it IS all down to personal circumstance!

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
Firstly i think to start a debate you must give your reasons for liking/disliking the x5 instead of using biased comments like ...
[quoteI won't be buying another and I will be in a proper car again as soon as the manufacturer opens the order books.
]
as these are just your personal opinions which you are fully entitled to of course but not fact.I also understand from previous threads that you have had plenty of problems with yours like the pan roof etc.
Why i bought mine...well i can't speak of the e70 having never owned one and it will be interesting to see other opinions on them.I would hazard a guess that the later ones are probably better than the earlier ones which is usually the case after the new ones have been tried out.
To save reposting the same as above i pretty much agree with what Sanj has said....i had a 325 sport and with my now eldest on the way we needed something bigger and also safer and i have never really liked estate/tourer cars (even though i think that the bmw and audi ones are arguably the best looking ones) too much of a hurse look for me (personal opinion of course )
So we opted for a prefacelift e53 x5 and after selling my 51plate330 and her 51plate polo and putting around 10k towards it we ended up with a y reg car
but was very happy with it,yes it had it's problems and wasn't a perfect car but what car is.If i'm honest i always thought we would go back to a 3 series in time or maybe a 5'er instead we bought another x5.A facelift 54 plate this time which we still have and so long as the finances in future let us do so we will more than likely have an e70 aswell (maybe not after this thread )
With the current economy and recession etc work has slowed right down and we have thought of going back to a 3 series or maybe a 5 to generate some cash flow and we may yet have to but until then i will be hanging on to my x5 as this is by far (and not without it's problems)the best car i have ever owned.I just can't see me driving anything else by choice.....apart from my little works suzuki van of course and not forgeting my other 'proper' pikey l200 van.
A few more comments......
@ Mogsyman....get some photo's up of the pikey wagon...i'l bet it's not as pikey as mine
@ bwg....i'm 35 and fortunate enough to be on my second x mate there's no age limit ....ohh and i've taken bends in my x's just as quick if not quicker than the 3'er mate
@ bullethead i've seen you drive you mad b d so i know that comment isn't bullshit
Edit....changed a spelling mistake i think i spelled it in welsh
andThe trend seems to be to shy away from these anti social monsters as people realise that normal cars are much nicer.

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
An interesting topic 535dboy, so I'll add my 2p worth as I guess I'm one of the guys you refer to.
We changed from a '06' e91 330d MSport Touring to an '06' e53 X5 V8 back in in 2008. Several reasons for this,we also needed to change an L200 at the time that was the family bus/load carrier for our place in France. Fuel + running costs for it were preety high + it was small in the back for ever growing son. We looked at several options, keep the 330d and p/x the L200 for a daily commute for the OH or sell both knowing we would out grow the 330d within 6 months as no.2 was in the planning stage.
Started looking at e61 525/530d and fell for a very nice demo albeit a lot more than we wanted to spend OH earns the dosh in our family so was impressed by her when she suggested an X5. Now having had several diesel BMW's the 3.0d was the one to look at all very similar/more money than the e61's. I then came acroos several V8's for much less money £3/4k less than a 3.0d of the same age. Did a bit of research and came across the old X5 drivers site, after reading AW8's very informative buyers guide and reports from other V8 owners I was convinced that this could be the route to go. At this time in 2008 unleaded was atleast 13p less than diesel, I do less than 7k a year so made the V8 the 1 to have over and above the 3.0d. Finally went for a 14k mile example handing over just under £2k and the 330d which had done 23k miles a great deal considering both were the same age and the 'X' was nearly £20k more when first registered
I have to say that I loved every day I was in the 'X', like Sanj said the driving position, rear space for the kids + the looks and the value that the 'X' represented over anything else at the time.
2 years down the line and the 'X' had behaved with out fault given around 22ish mpg and at this point had been the best car I had ever owned. However it needed things doing to it, Insp I, both rear tyres (20's) fronts were also close an MOT, Insurance, you get the picture total for this would have been around £2k In fairness we had budgeted for this so no big issue, however our son starts school in September so plenty more running around to be done, so the saleman in me started to look around on the BMW AUC site and others, Audi, Vauxhall and Merc. My gut reaction was and has been for a long time that the e70 was to big and too much money, it also seemed from owners that it had a few issues fuel consumption, reliability, tyres to name a few. As for the other makes, Audi dealers were the worst I have come across and very much doubt I will ever buy one. The new Merc E Class was nice but old manish and to much money. Don't knock what I'm now going to say bit the Vauxhall Insignia Sport Tourer was very nice with a strong deisel engine and great spec on the cars I was offered direct out of the back door from the factroy. I will freely say that I came very close to buying 1 the reason I did not was that the 'X' would need to be sold first and did not want the hassel + possible greif. This only left 1 car the e61 5er.
After trawling the lenght of the country and looking at around 25 cars I came across a '59' 520d MSport Business Ed Touring with a very nice spec. The dealer finally came up with a deal and the rest is history.
Now at this point most of you will have fallen asleep with my usual waffle , however I have one last point to make. The e61 is quite a bit better than the e53 X5 in many areas, better rear seat for fitting child seats, fresher looking dash + switch gear, better driving dynamics great fuel economy currently 44mpg for everyday driving, hit 49mpg over 180 varied miles on my last French Frolic last week.
Don't get me wrong the e53 X5 was a fantastic car and I will never forget that V8 roar when on song but the e61 IMHO is a much better all round car and if the truth be told, I should have bought one instead of the 'X' back in 2008.
I would also like to add that I have meet some great friends on here, in the flesh and on line, so I have the 'X' to thank for that. I also loved the banter on the old site and this new one continues with that, so if its ok with you lot I will be sticking around

@ BWG - I was 38 when we bought our X5. I would think that the age demographic has dropped every year since the e53 was launched. Plenty of sub £10k cars out there now and insurance is not as expensive as it used to be. Don't think there is a stereotyipical X5 driver, you only need to take a look at the motley crew on here to see that!!!!

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
I bought one, for what seems a common reason on here, because the wife was expecting and we wanted a car with space and that "safety" factor. Why the X5? We looked at a number of the competitors but with the facelift e70 the diesel emissions are below 200 which was far below anything else at the time we ordered.
We had test driven the competitors as well and we preferred the X5. Just something about it.

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
Things were tough when I was a kid at school, it kind of made me determined to work hard and achieve some sort of success. I set myself targets when I was younger and one of them was to own a 3-Series by the time I was 21. One of my mums friends laughed when she heard me say that and said you'll be lucky... that made me more determined to show the
Anyway, I bought my first BMW at 20 which was a 530d. I'd exceeded my target and I took great pleasure in rubbing it in my mum's mates face (the car that is )... by this time she had got divorced and was rolling around in an old golf. Having a BMW for me was everything I ever expected it to be and more. It was fantastic and I didn't ever have any major problems with it in the 4 years I had it and the 120k mile I had covered in it. I then got myself a 535i just because the 530d was getting on a bit and I wanted Sat Nav etc... I was looking at E60's but I just couldn't... the E39's just felt rock solid and well built, something which I think some of the newer BMW's have lost.
535i ownership was short lived as a couple of months later my mates dogs had pups and I decided that it would be a good idea to get two nice little Dobermans! They were growing by the week!! Time to change cars as it wasn't doing the leather any good having two dogs in the back.
I looked around at estates and 4x4's from Audi, BMW, Porsche and RR. I just couldn't get away from the BMW, I knew what to expect. I had always loved the X5 since its launch but having 5-Series for nearly 5 years I was looking at them. After speaking to the sales manager at the local dealers who is a good friend of mine, I had decided I wanted an all-rounder... something nippy yet spacious. That is when he suggested I looked at the 4.8is. Once I had done a little research I knew that if I was to get an X5, it would have to be the 4.8is. I found a high spec one and the dealership collected it and I bought it from them after driving it for about a minute! I've had it over a year and a half now and am still very happy with it. I still have a drive of my E39 every now and again as I gave it to my brother for finishing his apprenticeship.
I don't think I am too young to have an X5 at 26 (24 when I bought it), although I do get plenty of funny looks when I'm jumping out of my rumbling blacked out X5 in a hoodie and getting out the Dobes for a jog down the beach!
The dogs are happy now too...
