Hi

Post by neil50 » Wed Feb 19, 2020 9:20 pm

Hi everyone, recently brought my first X5 but have had the following BMW before:

E32 735 Se
E32 735 il
E39 530d touring
E61 525i touring
E61 525d touring

The X5 is a 2011 40d MSport 7 seat in black with black leather and interior (silver inserts).

It has full service history with speedo currently showing 127K

I am looking at having the gearbox oil/filter changed as as the transfer box fluid change as there is no evidence of having it done before.

What are the approximate costs in the UK for this? I am trying independent specialists as well as gearbox specialists.

I may look at retrofitting reversing camera later as I have PDC front and rear and will also look at upgrading the maps as they are 9 years old now and there are plenty of new / re-routed roads.

I live in Saltash Cornwall, does anyone have any recommended garages to use down this end of the country?

Thanks in anticipation of help and guidance in the coming years. I usually do all of my own repairs (kept my 530D on the road until 248000 Miles) but with the full service history I will be using a specialist for the X5.

Hello and :hi:

I was quoted £1,000 + VAT last year to change the fluids in the box, transfer box and diffs. That was at a listed (by ZF) ZF transmission specialist local to me.

I use an Indy for servicing and they thought that it could be done for about £800 but I haven’t yet committed to it as budgets are a bit tight.

:hi: Neil

Which transmission is it? Mine is the ZF 8-speed. In summer '18 I had the filter & fluid changed by a highly-regarded local ZF approved transmission specialist and IIRC they charged me just north of £500. They also changed the oils in the diffs and transfer box. They had the car for the morning.

That’s a much better price. The ZF Approved Dealer I contacted is in Milton Keynes.

I am a bit limited to options due to my location in Cornwall.

I have a local garage that has quoted just under £500 for gearbox oil, filter and transfer box fluid (not diffs)

I have had a gearbox centre quote £660 for the same job.

I will confirm that they use ZF approved oils before I confirm with them.
