timing chain guides & tensioner

Anyone from the North East UK know any good and reputable garage who are previously experienced with the M62TU engine, who would do a prevantative timing chain guides & tensioner repair on a 2003 X5 4.4i ? Currently 120k miles.

Previous M62TU experience is a must.

Sorry can't help with knowledge of an engine builder in your area (I am in Sussex) there is Register of BMW Specialists I would Google that and talk to ones close to where you are.
My own 4.6 was rebuilt following guide failure 4 years ago by a BMW Specialist in Sussex.

Out of interest what mileage have you got on the engine.

My guides failed at just about 90k total and catastrophic that required a complete rebuild, the engine is now at 151k

Maybe time to consider a change !!!

My lads 4.4, well he bought it for a song with guides already gone at around 110k working on the principle that "dad will fix it". Because of paranoia I took my sump off at 147k and it had lots of bits in there. I think its all about heat cycles, long journeys are better than 5/10 mile runs.

was thinking of getting a 2007 4.8i e70 ..........thoughts?

Yep, guides are due to be on the safe side, I haven’t read enough good things about a 4.8 that would encourage me to jump out of my 4.6.

When installing the new tensioner, does it matter which way the small holes face?

No it doesn’t matter, the hole from memory is in a groove round the circumference of the piston, which allows oil to enter no matter where the hole is. Plus the hole can end up anywhere as you screw the tensioner in.
