Over the last few weeks or so when starting the X5 I've had the message 'stop engine low oil pressure' and I have always switched off then back on again and all is OK.
Yesterday I thought that I had better check the oil level.. I am ashamed to say that I haven't done that for a long time and it was more apparent when I had to put 2 liters of oil in to get to the right level..
Lesson learnt. Check regularly.

My E53 used to give the same warning but in that case it was a bad sensor - it failed when the car was less than a week old! Had two more go in the first 6 months then it was fine until sold 6 years later.
