How do I remove the outside mirror black plastic frame?

Good evening

I have just purchased a replacement black plastic (gloss) frame for my passenger outside mirror

The previous owner busted it and bodged a repair with some glue. Looking at the new one there numerous tangs, hooked bits around the inside edge

Glue excepted what's the best way to remove the old one. Do I squeeze it in a particular way, or poke something like a lolly stick in to unhook the tangs in some work round the mirror way?

Does the black bit hook onto the mirror mount itself or is it clipped to the backing cowl like some sort of 2 part clam shell?

It just pulls out, no tools required. I have dismantled two now and it just clicks together, so fingers in and pull ( I started at the window end).

Pardon me for being thick....can you be a little more descriptive as I don't want to upset my precious beemer and scratch owt

I know once its off I wont fret but it cant drop off that easy surely

Is it fingers inside the frame and sort of curl it outwards..or peel it off from the outer edge curling it inwards like pulling the top off a tub of ice cream

the hook bits seem to point inwards suggesting some ice cream tub motion

And be slow when pulling away, conscious you're pulling towards the door, so watch don't hit it when the catches release. But really is that simple, clips into place - just overcome the clips.

Now I have to just hope the divvy that used some sort of white glue (not wood glue but it looks tough) near the window end didn't weld it all together as it seems the original has a snap in the bottom bit.....curious as the outer silver shell isn't marked. Prhaps he took it off and bust it. The mechnism does sound clunky when putting into reverse

Indeed simple. First time was easy for me as it was my dad's X5 that had met a van going the other way, so it was all apart and I just needed to put it together. The replacement mirror bits were then a lot easier to fit as I had taken it apart before.

When Mrs PVR met a van, the black bit was the only bit that broke so perhaps that was what happened to yours, the coloured bit was not marked at all. Replacement black part was cheap from C3BMW.

I suppose it is when it's in bits and you can study it. I already pee'd the dealer off by getting a matt one by mistake then swaping it for a gloss one. I couldn't go back if I b@llsed it up edit....and they're the same price too at around £34 quid from the dealer

Just hoping the nerd aint used some glue that trashes the inside....goodness knows if it's welded itself to the clamshell bit

I hope so...kin idiot. I can see (what worries me) like its oozed as if he threw some glue in and shoved it back, no all the way in I might add so he bodged on the car

there is a gloss (painted) and matt black....that link seems a tad cheaper but having feckd up the part no I went back for the proper gloss...again @£34

That one from the link is matt, which (I guess by coincidence) was also the colour that I already had. Was not aware of the gloss one.

Well today was the day I bit the bullet and finaly fitted my new glossy frame to the nearside mirror

The original was broken (snapped) near the hinge end. A bit of poirot detective work suggests this happens when the mirror is crushed against the door A frame from being hit.

Anyway...off with the old.....OMG...the previous owner (who probably broke it) had glued it back on. No of the tangs were there at all....not a one. He/she had used some white glue which was quite strong and bonded it to the alloy mirror housing.. Glue had squeezed out behind the mirror and was restricting the mrror movement.

Managed to get the back off and had to use a dremel to cut the old black frome off. I then had the clean the alloy mirror housing of reside etc. The black paint came off too on the frame interior. I would have pulled the (heated) mirror off too If I could figure how to but it didn't want to come easily and I didn't want to break it.

I offered up the new frame...it fitted. The back housing needed some fettling though as glue was all over the plastic finger and hooks. Stanley knife pairing the bit away slowly

After much cusring it's back together but not without a fight. Youd think they would go together easy like a clam shell...if only

I tried front on then back on...struggled
back on then front on....failed
front on the back on...eventually lining everything up and it's all locked together....sweet

I need to swap the the mirror glass though as it has some staining showing through. It's heated and has a split face for blind spots. Not sure if there are better than these but it sorts of lets the side down. Not sure if it would be easier to get a stick on one but that might be a poor shout

How do you know if the mirrors are heated? I thought I had heated ones on mine but they don't seem to clear when misted or wet which is really annoying... both of my 5 series had them and the only explaination I can think of is that the element / glass is damaged behind.
