16-9 Nav/TV Screen
16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Hi All
My screen has gone a wierd colour.
I can make everything out OK but it has what I can only describe as a slight green tint to it now. All colours seem washed out.
It started last week but if I turned it off then on again it was back to normal.
But now it seems to be permanent.
From what I have read I'm thinking it's either the ribbon cable or plug on the TV module.
Anyone any other ideas. Is it an easy fix.
cheers

Hi Kena
You may have heard my woes with the same issue. Was told it may be the battery so I changed this (Bosch Skiver) and also took out headunit and checked cables and it went back to blue........ For a day and a half! It went back to washed out dishwater then changed to blue again for 4 days and this afternoon changed back again
After talking to Sanj he says to check the module cabling ( on module)near spare wheel to see if that works which I have yet to do. BMW want £116 to look into it but after speaking to tech he said what I've already done Barr the module cabling is all they would do!
Please find me an answer and then we will both be happy

Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Thanks for the quick reply Penny. I don't know when I will get a chance to look at mine due to long hours at work.
Probably next weekend if I'm lucky.
I just keep the screen turned off for now.
Does the head unit come out easy ???

Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Is this on both Nav and TV modes? Just one colour range missing? The display should be receiving and RGB signal on three separate feeds which if no TV fitted are generated in the H/U, or if TV fitted are routed to the TV module and then fed on to the H/U. With the TV module being in the boot, the connector pins/socket may be getting corroded. Try a pencil with a good eraser on the other end and gently rub the eraser over the pins to clean them.
Given it's intermittent it sounds like poor conections at one of the plugs/sockets. Replacement screens can be sourced as they are made by Sharp - there's a thread on replacing them on Xoutpost. Work from the simplest option (dodgy plugs) up to more complex.
Jeez this used to be so simple when I had access to all the test kit and worked at Whyteleafe!! I miss being able to just go grab a meter or sig gen or test reciever and offering to help!

Sorry for my thick reply but if you mean colour drain on nav and tv yes it is. Dont know if it's the same for Kena?
I'm sure you right it is a dodgy connection and will have to check it out. Shame about you not being in Whyteleafe it about 5 mins from me

Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Its the same on everything from the menu screen, tv screen, nav screen and even the start up splash screen
Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Unfortunately the Labs were sold off by Ofcom. Used to be the Radio Technology & Compatability Group when it was part of the Radiocommunications Agency, housed in the old Officers Mess at RAF Kenley off Whyteleafe Hill. Ofcom made us all redundant and sold off the toys. In radio research terms they were amongst the Government's Crown Jewels. The company that bought the site still can't get planning permission for luxury flats seven years later!
And no you weren't being thick with your question or reply. To me that means it's either a poor connection on the video feed in to the H/U, or a dirty feed out from the video module at the back. The reason I say that is because I believe the RGB is regenerated at the back and it's common to all video signals at the front. Poor connection is the most likely faulty.
Any dead/stuck pixels? Showing Red, Green, Blue, Black or White (or possibly Grey)?

Not that I can see.
The whole screen has a slight tint to it and the black isn't the jet black it used to be

No dead pixels for me either so must be connection. If I flutter my eyelashes at Sanj he might help at the meet. I mean it works for Jig.... Mmmm what is the set up there lol
BTW I can't seem them getting planning permission any time soon either. They've just sold off practically all of Surrey Oaklands in Caterham for proposed development

Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Only mentioned as this did happen to me and I messed with the connections on the TV module. Need to clean the pins and then reseat the connector. PITA because of where it is but can be done in 30 mins.
Penny - bring some sandpaper (to clean the connectors)!
Oh and my pimp has just landed from his trip to India - must dash!

Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
Just a quick update.
Everything was fine whilst driving to work this morning but as soon as I started the X up when leaving work tonight the problem had returned.
I noticed when driving home that the main roads on the nav are all white instead of red and the speed camera symbols are white instead of yellow

Mine was okay on startup then went during the drive to work.
The head unit comes out real easy. I used a blunt cutlery knife with a cloth just to ease out the plastic trim surround and it just pops out. You then have 4 screws 2 top and 2 bottom. When done slowly ease out unit and you will see two ribbon cables connected at back. They have what I can only describe as levers that you have to pull back and then they pop out.
If I can do it, it will be Childs play to you still think it the ones at the back of the car though. Would have to be the tricky buggers !

Re: 16-9 Nav/TV Screen
From what I've read, the ones at the back can be prone to a little corrosion due to moisture ingress over the years and also a bit more movement in the boot that behind the dash. Of course its the trickiest area - its a BMW after all!!!

Hi
If you do a search for TV module location I know Sanj posted a photo if it. It means taking the boot tray out removing the spare wheel and the compressor which is in the black dome thing and it will be near the battery.
It's not that bad but lots of bending over and heavy lifting.
Amazing BMW reckon they've never heard if it as I know at least 6 people with the issue.
