4x4, abs and handbrake amber warning lights on x3 3.0d manual

Post by rockwell » Wed Sep 11, 2019 10:56 am

Hello all,
Driving back from Stansted Airport last night heard a slight knock / snap and all three amber lights above came on. Also touched the brakes and there was a noticeable shudder. Made it home but took it very easy. There was also a knocking noise when turning into our lane at slow speed. Could this be a dreaded transfer case failure?

This probably doesn't really answer your query, but I'll post it anyway...........

When I had multiple warning lights come on (plus cruise not working, and probably a couple of other things - can't remember now, it was over a year ago) but no untoward noises, it was triggered by a failed ABS sensor.

It was only properly diagnosed by an OBD scan.

Meant to ask in earlier post, could anyone provide a specification, or alternatively a good supplier for transfer case oil on an X3 3.0d manual 218HP 160KW? I'm a bit confused with the various oil specs banded about! I always use Opie Oils but they seem unsure about the Motul transfer case oil they supply.

Had the same problem on my E83 X3 3.0d (2009 )
Turned out to be rear OS wheel sensor wrecked by corrosionunder theABS exciter ring on the driveshaft causes the ring to expand and catches the ABS sensor and destroys it, new sensor will do the same
You have to remove the drive shaft and remove the ring, clean off the corrosion, press a new ring on and refit
Main problem was the drive shaft took ages to separate from the hub, due to corrosion
Others have had the same
Error code showed up a faulty OSR sensor.
Once a new ring and sensor fitted, all codes reset OK
Just something to look for :D

A brief update, the diagnostic guy said the transfer case has failed! he took it to a local BMW indy mechanic for an opinion and he quoted £1100 to rebuild / repair the transfer case. As well as the trio of warning lights there was a fairly loud and noticeable clunking noise, particularly when cornering slowly.
Could anyone kindly confirm if this quote sounds about right? I had assumed i could get a new case fitted for not much more.
