don't forget that different tyre manufacturers will have different manufacturing tolerances and also differing tread depth on brand new tyres - they're rarely the often bandied-about "8mm".

I forgot to add at that point...... My brand new Avons have 7.5mm

They dont mention SUV, but as the rating is correct (106Y) I assume they are still ok?

Yes 106Y is the correct load.

There seem to be a lot of conflicting reports online about whether your insurance would be void if you mixed runflat and non runflat.

Anyone have any insight?

I did think it was illegal but it appear not to be when I checked , I know my local tyre fitter will not mix runflats and non runflats on a car but will change all tyres to ordinary tyres no issue , flat refuses due to possibility of being sued after an accident from what was said.

Not sure if mot would object or not ?

Phoned a couple of local places and they were pretty adamant (nearly to the point of getting cross!) that they would not mix non run flats and run flats as it would "handle like a pig" apparently.

I don’t see it as an MOT issue as that simply says mixing run flat and non run flat is legal, but NOT recommended. It makes no mention of use on different axles.

Handling could indeed be interesting though

I found 1 report of someone online with an X5 running a mix and handling wasn’t affected. Also plenty of other BMW models with the same arrangement and no handling issues.

You might have issues with rolling radius between the axles as runflat tyres have much stiffer sidewalls so won't deflect as much under load but you can only try it and see . The only other issue is getting someone to actually fit them for you !

I know it's a totally different car, but I briefly had one axle normal tyres & one axle runflats on my E46 and it handled absolutely fine.

That ^^^ sounds like a sales pitch to me. Why would he get sued if he's doing nothing wrong by mixing them?? A already posted here it's not an MOT issue, therefore it's not bad practice, or illegal.

Tyres ordered! Star rated, non run flat Pirelli’s for the front and star rated run flat Dunlop’s for the rear! £640 on eBay last night using a 15% discount code for MyTyres.

Nervously looking forward to getting them fitted. I’ll update the thread with the final verdict in case it helps other users too.

Posted in here before when I was considering trying non star tyres and eventually went for Michelin latitude sport 3.

Just to update, had them on for last 18 months now and done over 20k miles.

I’m quite a spirited driver but still have around 5mm left all round, even wear and had no problems with them. In fact will be replacing with same tyres when these wear out.

Oh and the ride quality was 10 times better then with run flats.
