Parking heater remote start- Enabling
Re: Parking heater remote start- Enabling
Hello,
I'm new to this forum, and want to thanks the members for all the information I founded already by reading several posts.
I currently own an X 3.0D from end 2005, and wanted to install the parking heater.
I did enable it on the OBD with the the BMW scanner V1.4.0, installed the telestart T91 in the trunk, and it's working but ...
the Webasto fires up, it lasts a good minute; and when the glowplug switches to sensing mode the combustion fan suddenly stops.
After that white smokes exits the Webasto air-intake, then the fan starts again (shutdown cycle).
The fault I got from the BMW scanner is "combustion fan".
from the previous post I realised that it might be that the Webasto is not guilty but the climate control unit is.
it's part number 6.972.163 which is not for cars with parking heater, so I should upgrade to a new (expensive!) climate control unit.
Now I notice that when its cold weather the Webasto starts (as it is supposed to do to help warming up the engine only) but after a minute or two shuts down as it is doing when used as a parking heater.
in this case it has nothing to do with the climate control unit
Also it seems that several members got the parking aux heater working without changing this climate control.
Is it because there has been a change between pre-facelift and post-facelift X5 ?
Anyone with an answer will help me (and others I suppose) a lot !
Sorry for this lengthy post

Re: Parking heater remote start- Enabling
hi roland and welcome to the forum.
you have described exactly what happened to my aux heater also.
enabling it with the scanner would appear to be a false promise for the reasons explained previously.
maybe you could try de-selecting it with the scanner, clearing the fault codes. and seeing if it will work normally on a cold morning start again.
mine will only work with my remote control now.

No point in fitting remote start and/or enabling aux heat on the OBD - unless you convert the standard supplementary heater (Webasto Top Z) to auxiliary heater status (Webasto Top C/E) - to this end you will need to purchase and install:-
1. auxiliary heater latent heat shut-off valve
2. auxiliary heater (electric) circulation pump if not already present (powered off the Webasto)
3. brackets, bolts, hoses and clips for 1) and 2)
Then replace the H+V panel with the park heating variant (see earlier post) and finally scanner-enable the set-up
I have not priced this up but bet its £££!

Re: Parking heater remote start- Enabling
i thought a remotely activated heater would work regardless of wether its enabled on the obc?

Not if there is no pump to circulate the water - the pump and block-jacket isolator valve may not be there on the standard supplementary heater (Thermo Top Z) set up - in this case if you hot wire the Top z you will just bugger the thing 'cos there will be no circulation through the HE and no stat to trip it out

Re: Parking heater remote start- Enabling
mines a thermo top z and after fitting my diy remote set up 2 years ago it all worked fine - water pump circulated water, cabin blower fan came on automatically after about 5 mins to heat the windscreen etc . no probs at all untill i enabled the obc aux heat with the scanner, then went t"*s up!!
on the thermo top z model the water pump in not located on the heater its self but further below it - hard wired into the cars cooling system - thats the only difference afaik between the thermo top z and c.

I can't find an electric water pump - been all through the plumbing - where is yours?

Parking heater remote start- Enabling
My webasto is firing up and is not touchable as it gets so hot, water pipe is also hot so I assume it's just circulating water around the block as the interior doesn't warm up. This is trying to run it from the obc after I've enabled it with bmwscanner. Red fan symbol flashes during operation,

If the engine is not running and there is no electric pump (plugs in to the top plate of the Webasto) or the pump is knackered, then no water is circulating - thats maybe why the Webasto gets so hot
I certainly don't have an electric water pump - been all through the plumbing - where is yours?
i'm not exactly sure where it is, what i thought was the pump is probably the solenoid valve, but i know a pump comes on because when i remotely start my heater, a jet of circulating water can be readily seen by unscrewing the radiator cap.

Sincere apologies fenj66 - mine does have a remote Webasto circ pump - its the black plastic thing in front of the ABS pump - powered via a blue/green cable that connects into the Webasto top plate (terminal X5 in the Webasto manual - it would be wouldn't it!) via the vehicle harness. I have edited my earlier posts to reflect this.
Suspect my pump ain't working - does not make any noise/vibrate - and no visible disturbance looking into the header tank

Re: Parking heater remote start- Enabling
My control unit is part number 64116927898....i have the grey/black wire is connected to pin 2 which leads to an unused plug under the webasto heater. If i set a time for the webasto via obc it fires up, gets hot as do the pipe that leads to the engine block and another pipe that leads back to the heater under the solenoid. Im assuming to get it to heat the interior i need to do the "resistor hack" as per post #254 and change the control panel to 64116927899 or 64116927901. which im guessing will be expensive and cant find either part for sale on ebay etc. Which lead me back to remote start up.....
Will remote start up work and heat the interior or do you still need to change everything? I was looking at getting a GMS remote unit from www.danhag.de so i can phone it to activate heating but if this will not work then there is no point.

before i played around with trying to enable the aux heat optionon the obc with a scanner, my home made remote worked well and indeed turned the interior fan on to heat up the cabin after 5 mins or so of the heater running.
you could test this be putting a live +12v feed into pin1 on the multiplug on the webasto unit and leaving it attached - you should see what happens and if yours is working correctly only then add a remote control to do the same job later.
i am still playing around trying to get the obc version to work properly but i think i have to agree with post *254 that its not possible without the required climate control panel.

Re: Parking heater remote start- Enabling
I note that there is a long thread on BMWland going back to 2006 re. trying to get OBD operation of aux heat on E39s - all to no avail - findings/consensus included:-
- BMW fitted the Webastos with their own control circuits and therefore Webasto cannot provide any info/support re. the OBD function (standard Webasto wiring would have connected Pin 4 of the heater to the vehicle's H&V fan - Pin 4 not used on BMW installation as coms between the heater and the vehicle (inc. the H&V panel) are via the kbus
- the H&V panel in UK-supplied 3.0D X5s does not support OBD aux operation and cannot be re-coded to do so (web surfing indicates a requisite BMW-supplied unit costs at least £500)
- BMW no longer supply/technically support the (T70) telestart system
- Fitting the required parts to enable OBD operation (inc. isolator valve and requisite H&V panel ) - may nevertheless require coding changes by BMW for correct functioning
Don't think I'll bother
