Look on Real OEM for BMW, it a car specific parts catalogue.
Put the last seven digits in from your VIN number and then go to the gearbox section, this will tell you what box and BMW service kit number you need
Then cross reference this on EBay or other parts sites.
Personally I took mine to an auto box shop no had them do it , turned out to be £80 extra than doing it myself
Bet it's a mare of a job too without a ramp

Gearbox oil
Re: Gearbox oil
Simple? Kind of... you'll have to crawl underneath the car, remove the transmission cover (large plastic panel) and snap a photo of the transmission ID plate.Edward R-W wrote: ↑Mon Jul 08, 2019 9:53 pm Being a novice with my 2004 E53 X5 3.0d auto 6 speed box, how do I find out what filter kit I will need to purchase? I have been looking online at various kits and the filters look different as apparently there are different gearboxes? Is there a simple way I can find out what model of gearbox I have?
This will tell you (and parts suppliers) everything you need to know.

All facelift E53 3.0d have the ZF 6HP26 box with the xDrive output flange (6HP-26X). BMW Code is GA6HP26Z.
Service kit is here:

OEM oil type is here:

The car MUST be level and you need to adhere to the temperature requirements too.

Re: Gearbox oil
There IS a bit of variation across the entire E53 X5 LCI range though, with some engine variants having the plastic pan (rather than metal) and some having a side fill port, while others have bottom-fill.

Re: Gearbox oil
The part of this thread I responded to refers to the face lifted E53 3.0d[/b] which only has one engine version in the UK, one gearbox variant and one listed OEM service kit - hence the parts database only referring to single codes across the board. BMWs own service instructions for the late model E53d 3.0d also only refer to one version in use, with only one fill plug location. The plastic pan option is greyed out for this variant.

Re: Gearbox oil
I agree entirely - I was just adding the extra information in case owners of other variants (and from other countries) read this thread too.X5Sport wrote: ↑Wed Jul 10, 2019 8:24 pmThe part of this thread I responded to refers to the face lifted E53 3.0d which only has one engine version in the UK, one gearbox variant and one listed OEM service kit - hence the parts database only referring to single codes across the board.
