BMW Insured Warranty - Y/N?
Our 2011 40d SE 40k miles is coming off its AUC warranty next month, and the choices appear to be:
- BMW Insured Warranty - Comprehensive - £834 with £250 excess (£1441 with £0 excess!)
- Warranty Direct (with all options ticked) £800 with £0 excess / £550 with £250 excess
- self-insure (other warranties - eg Warranty Wise - over £1000)
Our previous 2009 35sd M-sport went on to the BMW Insured warranty which paid out for new sunroof, small turbo failure and other bits and pieces, with no particular paying out issues.
The current car hasn't missed a (serious) beat over the last year (a temporary clutch lockup failure, front arb joint and glow plug controller, all fixed under AUC warranty). Just been main dealer serviced and MoT'd.
So, which one should I go for? Self-insurance is tempting, but £800 doesn't go too far on a repair nowadays; I've heard good and bad things about WD; the Insured Warranty has a potentially painful £250 excess.
Anyone mentioning the BMW pay monthly option should look carefully at the costs - in our example, it is 26% higher than the single annual fee.

I think the bmw is the best option from reading posts on here in the past.
Some of the others are not worth the paper they are printed on.

The bmw one , £250 would hardly buy a scan and an hrs labour today !

I’ve had Warranty Direct before on the E53 and there are so many get out clauses and exemptions I have kept my BMW Warranty going on the X6. Expensive it may be but I have a lot more faith in it based on how well members on here have got on with it.
The critical issue (for me) with WD is diagnostics are not covered at all. That can make a simple fault that takes a while to find expensive. As an example £250 to find a £10 relay had failed. They only paid for the relay.
On the plus side they paid all but £75 of a £3,500 gearbox repair bill.

There's a huge thread on Pistonheads about how terrible your second option have been with someones M5.
I wouldn't touch them if they were half the price of the BMW warranty (which I have on my 2010 40D but haven't had to use yet. )

I've had the BMW warranty on my x6 since I bought it. As long as you have it serviced they haven't quibbled yet, and with claims I've made, I've saved money....

As per the other comments and sentiments on this thread, go for the BMW Warranty.
I've had it on the E53 for the last 11 years and it has paid out every time for every issue I have had (only £100 excess). I've had it on my M5 also, and when the time comes I'll be getting it without doubt on the X5M.
Not sure if you have the Emergency Breakdown cover included in that, but that was fantastic. Response rates excellent and always recovered to a BMW Dealer of my choice and a Hire Car provided within hours. Again, worth every penny.

Having had a BMW warranty on my 335i and Audi warranty on my A7 I was keen for a BMW on the E70, however at £1440 I couldn’t justify it. Famous last words I know, but the LCi is fairly reliable and as I was advised the chances of anything too major going are slim.
In the end I opted not to bother with a warranty, but a large contributing factor was that I have a very good BMW specialist 20mins away. I had the transfer case go last week but he fitted a clutch repair kit and it was £500 all in.

Thanks for all the comments/advice/warnings
An interesting development last week, with a dealer asking me not to take out the insured warranty...
Basically, the AUC runs out at the end of the month. As a last gasp attempt to get every last niggle sorted under the AUC, it was due in last week for glow plugs and ARB joint replacement when I noticed that CAS on the passenger door wasn't working, and added that to the last AUC fix list.
Picking the car up, they said it would take 2-6 weeks to receive a replacement handle painted in the correct colour (i.e. beyond the warranty expiry date), and could I not take out the insured warranty in the meantime as it will confuse the system and it may end up being charged against the insured warranty with me paying for the excess. I know computers can do funny things, but even I struggled with that concept.
When I suggested that they should therefore cover any issues in the gap between the AUC and insured warranty and pick any additional premium costs if the insured price rose in the interim, they decided to send the AUC paperwork into the system immediately, rather thna wait until the job was completed.
Looks like I will be taking out the insured warranty after all...
