Recall - Alternator Screw

Post by Wesley1874 » Mon Apr 15, 2019 6:54 pm

I've just had a recall notice about a threaded bolt on the alternator, which if it breaks, can affect the power steering. Has anybody else had this?
Thanks

Got the dealer to check mine after reading about it on the DVSA Recalls site. Mine isn’t affected but apparently a bolt breaks and that causes the belt to go slack. That in turn means the PAS pump isn’t being driven and the steering gets seriously heavy...... and your battery goes flat too. It that was how it was described to me.

It’s one of several affecting the E70/71 (and others) at present. Heater wiring is another recall issue - though mine was downgraded from ‘Recall/Investigate’ to ‘For Information’ two weeks back.

Get the recall done!
I found out about the recall 6th March.
First available date for the recall work 28th March.
Bolt failed 13th March.
Car recovered and repaired, £500 bill.
Currently trying to recover costs from BMW.

My letter came last week whilst I was away. Phoned up yesterday to book it in to BMW Teesside - huge waiting list, was told September - but after asking lady I spoke with if there was anything earlier she found a cancellation first week in June.

164500 and counting, with a longish journey panned in May, so I hope the screw lasts a while yet!!!!

Graeme

Hi mate.
I had the same problem, Bolt snapped and i had to get it fixed before car went in for recall.

Service guy asked me if i knew what the recall was for.
I said no and he and explained to me that they need to replace some alternator bolts because they are failing.

Thats when i told him it happened 2 weeks prior to my recall date.

He asked if had the receipts of the work i done so he could get bmw Germany to refund my cost of repairs, i told him yes because i bought the bolts from them and got my garage to fix it.

I gave him the receipts which was £7.00 for bolt and £65.00 labour and £70.00 recovery in total £142.00.

He did tell me recovery cost they might not refund but rest they should do.

1 week later i got a call from him and was told bmw has issued a refund to them and he will send me a cheque.
A week later got my refund minus recovery cost.

He said the part receipt or garage receipt must have the part number of broken bolt on it.

Get in touch with your local bmw where you got your recall done or contact bmw and ask for a refund.
£500.00 is a large amount but give it a try..

I've lodged a claim with BMW UK.
I'll let you know the outcome.

Fortunately that didn't cost me as my breakdown insurance covered that.
