Anyone running an x40d M Sport on 19" wheels?

Post by JF1980 » Fri Apr 05, 2019 9:45 pm

Just wondering what they look like on the car. Even more interested to hear if you have downsized from 20" - do the 19's look ok with the flared arches, is the ride more comfortable, anything else to consider?

I have to replace all four tyres for the MOT as my Bridgestones are in bad shape. The rears are not so much worn on the inside as they are simply falling apart with cracks appearing inside the main channels plus a few large gashes. Fronts are bald on the outside.

I'm considering -

1) a different RFT (currently Bridgestones, maybe considering Continental)
2) a non-rft plus space saver
3) downsize to 19"

My old E53 3.0d Sport had 19" wheels and the ride felt a lot more forgiving, potholes and bumps were a little less jarring and if I had to climb a kerb for whatever reason (slowly) then I didn't feel like I was going buckle the wheel or split a tyre. On the other side the 20's do look great on the E70.

I have a 19” winter set for the X6 and they do look a little lost in the arches although the outer diameter is exactly the same as the 20” but the rim width is smaller. The X6 does have a ‘wide arse’.

Comfort wise I would say that they are gentler and possibly quieter. I have ‘*’ RFTs on both (mine is still under a BMW Warranty).

You can always fit spacers if you wanted to increase the track.

Thanks. I take it your winter set are the staggered size (285 rear)? Do you use spacers with them? Any photos with them on?

I have 19s staggered on my 40d - I have the SE version with the sport suspension and they feel fine (tbh if you hit bad road I don't think it really matters what tyres/wheels you have).

I have Bridgestone Turanza which are * rated but no RFT. I don't have spare wheel, just the foam and compressor ...

I decided to stick with the 20's for one more set of tyres. Changed tyre brand to see if that makes any difference to the ride.

Mine came with 19’s but switched to 20” straight away and noticed the opposite effect ie they rode better then the 19’s.

Hi you could try a set of X6 wheels and tyres just require the centre bores done on the rears to 74.1 as they run staggered set up , the offsets are also et21 on the rears so tend to fill the arches better ( have a set for sale with winter tyres on 285/45/19 rears , 255/50/19 fronts ) Unfortunately the summer tyres tend to age and crack when used all year due to the softer compound of the winter tyres !
