Thermostat temp only 70c after 10 miles on e70.

Post by Leslie » Mon Feb 18, 2019 2:00 pm

I did think the heater in my e70 sd wasn't as good as my old 330d which was like a furnace ! I managed to unlock the hidden menu today and although it quickly rose to about 65c that was about it , a long uphill climb brought it to 70c so I have a thermostat issue. It is still regenning as the pipes are clean but probably not very well.
I guess it should be about 90c ?

I suspect a new stat required.

Thanks Marti , I have ordered both the main one and Egr one though probably only one is faulty then probably 6 new heater plugs and a controller for my cold start vibration and that might be it till the next time :D

Well EGr stat changed ths morn ,of course a uk spec car is different than the us ones on youtube , the vacuum line is still right in the way and doesn't want to go back due to the engine lifting eye but cut a cable tie down the hard vac line to allow a little movement and got the inside 10mm out and the vac line pulled back.
It hasn't made much difference to temps so still needs main stat which is a much bigger job and means dropping the coolant.
Pic below shows vac line removed from pump and pulled back as far as it can go , not much room to get to 10mm bolt but 1/4 ratchet just fits.

Main stat changed today and we are now at 90c so looking forward to much improved mpg :P Took me about 2 hours ,not sure if the rad has a drain but there is a cover with 4 torx screws under it and one was rusted to hell and wouldn't come out so I just pulled the stat pipes off with a basin underneath in the end, needs must !
The only bleed screw I could find was the one on the EGR , video's on youtube show 3 but may be American spec cars but I left the rad cap off with engine running and gave the hose a good few squeezes to help get the air out and the heater is hot so all good. :D
I seem to have a little oil leak where the rubber goes in the front of the small turbo and the airflow meter pipe pushes in so will look for a new one of those .I put a cloth on the turbo once it was off as you don't want anything getting in there like a dropped bolt :o and no need to take the fan of on an x5 as there is enough room but you must take the throttle valve pipe in front of egr valve off to allow the water pipe to slide back.

How did you discover that you needed to do this?

I thought the heater was poor so checked the hidden menu to see the temps and was only showing 65c.Its a very common issue .

Hidden menu?

Edit: Don't worry, think I've found it, unlock with the sum of the trailing VIN digits.
