Yet another newbie newbie with issues.

Post by X5D » Sun Jan 20, 2019 11:04 am

Hi everyone.

Bought a mega cheap e53 X5 sport as I've fancied one for years. Working my way through various issues. I've resolved a few of them but I have developed a rattle which I suspect is the timing chain. I only hear it when I come off the throttle and the engine is slowing down. Its absolutely fine on start up which seems to be most peoples issues. Can anyone confirm? Thanks in advance

Assuming from your title that you have a diesel, it is the V8 petrol engines that show the rattle at idle. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t a chain issue just that it is very unusual on a 3.0 diesel. It was an issue on the 2.0L diesels (N47) engine used on various cars but not the E53 (M57).
