So I thought I would share with you some figures from our Christmas trip to Europe. Overall I was pleased by the X5 and how it performed. There are a few things that I will need to investigate further, but overall I’m happy.
To explain the mileage / consumption:
~ 2060 miles was mostly motorway (journey there and back) out of which around 800 miles was on Autobahn – now this is always fun. I did this journey number of times in different cars (A6, VW Passat, Skoda Superb) and X5 is my favourite. The stability at high speeds, the acceleration from 80pmh upwards … so good. I was a bit disappointed with top speed. It accelerates pretty good to around 125mph and that’s about it. On longer stretch I would get it to 135mph, but it was very slow from 125 onwards. Fuel consumption wasn’t great at the high speeds, but nothing out of ordinary (you can drive around 110mph @ 22 mpg). When I was driving at the national limit (70 – 80mpg) and traffic was fluent, I was getting 34mpg.
~ 500 miles was on mostly B roads at low speeds but no traffic … here my MPG was also pretty good – I would get past 30mpg at some parts. Oh and then there is the quality of roads. Not the greatest where we went and the sport suspension is really poor in those scenarios – I know the sport suspension was optional but, god, it’s not fit for anything but motorway (where it’s actually very good )
Anyone else done big drives over the Christmas period?

Re: Christmas driving
Well that’s great. You’ve had a good journey. It’s good to know the X5 was your best choice on the longer trips.
I’m averaging 22mpg on my short journeys which can’t be helped. I’m finally selling the 5 series tomorrow if all goes well. So will be my only car soon. Plan to buy a Yaris hybrid auto for the short journeys as I’ve had the dpf code on mine recently. It’s weird how the f10 was abused on sort journeys but never got a dpf code
I wish they made a X5 hybrid soon .

Re: Christmas driving
I drove to London and back in my V8 Range Rover Sport and got 26 mpg.....(according to the computer).
ULEZ compliant petrol euro 4.
Not a BMW, not a hybrid and I didn't leave the UK (I only had 2 days off following consecutive 12 hr working days)
But it was a longer than usual trip over the Christmas period.
Perhaps if I work even harder this year Santa will give me more time off for Christmas 2019 and a more fuel efficent vehicle.
