Jumping when changing up gears

Is there any indication that this reset has worked?

It can be done at any time. All you are doing is clearing the 'adaption' electronic memory. No mechanical changes at all so the temp or timing does not matter..

Just repeating my question in case you missed it - when you do the reset routine is there any indication that it's been done (beep, display etc etc)?

Dan, No - there are't any audible or visual indicators

alex1985blue, I think you have had by far the best advice you are likely to get online from fellow owners - especially from x5sport.

I have read the advice tio rest before & I performed this for someone who saw improvements on their car that was prior hunting the gears. That said I also read somewhere else that the reset procedure only changes the throttle values, either way it's got to be worth a try.

If still problematic then I agree you need expert help.............Once again x5port seems to have given good advice.

If no physical problems found by suitable expert(s) then I might consider getting the fluid changed albeit accepting this may be dead money if no improvement.

If you decide to sell privately, (rather than pay to sort this), then I hope you disclose the issue to next buyer

Now a week since you first recieved advice.........any update on situation &/or results of the reset ?

Yeah I agree the advice given on here has not just been excelent but it has comprehensive as well which really helps.

Not much has changed really even doing the hold the accelerator down for 30 secs, so I will need to get it looked at, just havent had time as ive got so much uni coursework on at the moment.

I will be booking it into Jasons workshop at some stage to be looked at, and at the same time I will get the gearbox oil changed as a preventative measure anyway.

I will keep you all posted.

It wasn't me who had a problem but I thought I'd try the reset anyway figuring it would be better to reset it so it could adapt to my driving rather than the last owners. I had noticed it made some slightly odd changes and it seems to be better now and more eager to change up when cold.

Ok guys this got worse today, in traffic when the car was warm, it did it again, but worse.

It almost feels as if the gearbox has a lazy solenoid for selecting first and second and when you press the accelerator it tales a split second for the gear to engage, mean time the revs have increased due to no drive and when the gear is eventually selected the car jumps because of the increased revs.

Hope you know what I mean.

Anyway, who can recommend a gearbox specialist? After someone who really knows what they are doing and must be around the m25 area. I don't mind traveling, to get a decent garage. I.e who is the best?

Might give you some pointers as to who to talk too. I really do hope it's a simple fix, but you may need to be prepared for an unpleasant truth which none of us wanted for you.

I have to say that these auto gearbox issues are starting to become more common now. The US Boards have been full of this for a couple of years now, and it seems that it's over here too. Not that BMW will ever admit to there being an issue of course. But I suppose from their position it's a small percentage overall - or at least I hope it is - but it is occurring on all the vehicles which use this box and not just BMW.

Do a web search for ZF 6HP26Z and you will quickly see what I mean.....

Just a quick update guys, I have spoken to Richard, from Barker Motor Works and he said what I have described to be is low gearbox oil. The car is booked in for Wednesday, and I will get it back on Thursday, so I will let you guys know i that is the cause of the problem. Hopefully it is only that as I don't really what a new gearbox or gearbox ecu.

To be honest I haven't really had a look yet, but I cant see any oil marks on my drive. I will have a look, but im pretty busy at the moment and I don't think Il get time before Wednesday.

Hey Guys and Girls

I called call Richard at Barker Motor Works in Haslemere and got my gearbox oil replaced, and got the oil filter for the gearbox replaced at the same time.

Replacing the gearbox oil has really changed the car, the gears change much more smoothly so I can really recommend his mechanical skills.

If you are to get work done by Richard, I can suggest that he is really good, but ask that he does NOT wash the car as mine has come back with paintwork problems.
