hesitating, chugging

Hi, ive got a 2011 40d and when its cold it seems to chug on low revs, it does seem to go when its warmed up but i have noticed a slight hesitation again at low throttle ??

Could be a number of things.....your best bet would be a diagnostic read or we could be here days guessing.

Ok, as I’ve not had any warning lights appear I didn’t realise that there would be any information on the ecu

You wont always get a light, make sure all the codes that come up are cleared as there will be some historic ones, go for a 5 or so mile drive then read again,,,,

Sounds like it’s a glow plug issue. Mine does that.
Only when it’s cold. Get carly read and if you have Lin bus comms down it’s the glow plug controller that’s dead. I don’t get any warning lights on dash unless you get diagnostics on ISTA. I would get it sorted and I’m guessing your regeneration isn’t happening.

Do you do lots of short trips?
Or could be EGR as mine starting vibrating too in the N57 when cold.

No I do long journeys, I’ll get it checked out and see what comes up. Someone said to me the gear box might need a service as it’s coming up to 60k and this can cause these symptoms

That will apply to me as mine is 75k.
How much would a gearbox service cost and is it a service item.?

Gearbox service is not done by BMW. As far as they are concerned the system is sealed for life (three years is their ‘life’).

ZF recommend 8 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. I need to get mine done so prices are good to know if anyone has them?

ADC bmw specialists quoted me £390 all in , but from what I can gather they only use zf parts.

I would too. Most of that will be the proper transmission oil.

I always use ZF parts after going to Dortmund Germany to have my e38 box serviced cost me 380euros on a Saturday morning and they did all that in the link below...if you dont use the correct fluid you'll have big problems..taking my X6 next year as its reached 100k, then I'll service it every 45k as recommended by the engineer at ZF , you learn a vast knowledge about the boxes while your there even how to select gears properly...yes! on an auto box so you dont damage it....you'd be surprised,

The trip will cost you the service....best to call them at ZF Dortmund...there's approx a £50 extra difference if you have it done on a saturday, then you have your fuel and Eurostar or ferry and whether you have a hotel for a night......oh they only take cash from international customers (Euros).
