New Transmission £9698
Re: New Transmission £9698
I might be wrong, but I believe that transmission oil change is not done same way as engine oil change (as you state: empty and then fill). You should fill it with the new oil whilst the old one goes out - garages are using machine to do this.tj67 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 28, 2018 12:36 pm Hello again......
I got my 30d back this morning, £3000 service (4 new tyres, 4 brake pads, usb nav update, cv joints, engine oil/filter, engine steam cleaned.....
I asked for the print out for the trans diagnosis, and was told they dont supply these as they are the property of BMW and of no use to non BMW techs.
On the paperwork the trans diagnosis just says transmission jumping gears, trans oil very dirty needs replacing.
When i dropped the car off last week and asked about trans fluid service they came out with the 'lifetime' line.
I have found a specialist near by who can do a full fluid change with pan/filter and sleeve.
My question is now this.
Should i get the fluid change and hope that it doesn't make things worse ? I don't mind trying this out to help the transmission perform better, but i don't want to go and make things worse. And if i should change it, should i do a x2 refill ? empty, fill, empty, fill ?
Cheers !!

Re: New Transmission £9698
in a nutshell it's empty, remove sump (includes filter), fit new sump and then fill at the correct temperature to ensure correct amount goes in.
Re: New Transmission £9698
I found a BMW indi who was on the ZF list on their website, so hopefully he will be clued up on what to do, i would never attempt anything more than a fuse change myself. Thanks for the advice, i shall be taking it there tomorrow to make an appointment, i'll let you know how the transmission holds up.
Re: New Transmission £9698
I suggest you get one of those ZF specialists to do a diagnostics and recommend a course of action. If you change the oil and it doesn’t cure the problem then you have wasted that money. A diagnostics test will be half the cost of an oil change
Re: New Transmission £9698
You are entitled to a copy of any reports. Methinks that they are covering the arses for a misdiagnosis!

Re: New Transmission £9698
The £3k bil for what they did would be enough to irritate me.
If you paid for a diagnostic report on the box you expect a detailed report. If you paid for a diagnostic process without a report then arguably they don't have to provide a written report or printout.
Personally if I had a quote for near £10k I would want oportunity to have something printed out so I could shop around, get some other prices and decide what to do next. I would openly tell them why I would want the printout and give them opportunity to remove/edit personal data such as technician info etc
I suggest raising this with the service manager and escalate to dealer principal (DP) if getting nowhere. Next step wold be to involve bmw uk.
There isn't a GDPR or data legislation issue so I see no food reason for them to withold the information.
The 1st non bmw diagnostic and quote will likely undercut the quote you had but don't dismiss more legwork & quotes if you have another vehicle to use whilst number crunching and considering next step(s) forward.

Update**
48 hours ago (Fri) i took the car to the indi BMW garage that i found through the ZF website.
They have been on courses with ZF so i was happy to find them.
They had the car all day, changed the pan/filter, emptied and topped up at correct temps, quoted £500, but the actual cost was £465.
I drove home and it instantly felt better, no problems at all, goes through all 8 gears on DS smooth as silk. And goes through 7 gears on D smooth as well.
I have done 200 miles this weekend all on A roads with mixture of gradients and bends, some overtakes, all went very very smooth, i am very impressed and hopeful that i will be ok for plenty of miles to come.
Thanks for your help anyway.

Hmm. Sounds like the BMW Dealer was touting for business and may be ‘rogue’.
Glad it is all sorted now - and for a lot less than you feared. Enjoy it

Re: New Transmission £9698
I thought the auto box was smooth in my car until i had the service done on it well worth doing.
Re: New Transmission £9698
Could you say where you had it done please.
Complained to bmw about my M box being a bit savage and jerky but they say there is nothing wrong with it.
Probably because it's under bmw warranty and if it was duff it would be new box time.
I just think it needs a service.
