X5 3.0 or 40d 3.0

Post by X5 white » Wed Nov 28, 2018 12:32 am

Hi am wanting to purchase X5 now s what’s the difference between 30.d a d 40d 3.0? Is the 40d 3.0 diesel better engine ? Cheap on tax and performance ?

Is it better to Go for panoramic roof ? I’ve heard there are few issues with having it?

Please if any one can advise me before purchasing

Thanks

30d is a single turbo, 40d a twin with the M50d being a triple. They’re all 3.0 litre straight sixes.

It’s mainly more bhp and torque. 40d & M50d will have increasing tax as you would expect, and slightly worse economy. They do however come with steadily larger ‘grin factors’ as they get increasingly quicker.

Personal choice is the 40d as I found the 30d a little light on performance - and that’s not to say it is poor at all - and the M50d a little rough. It’s very much personal choice and how you drive.

I was in the same position recently. I opted for a 30D for better economy and for 1 less turbo to go wrong. I think its quick enough to be honest and have found myself driving more sensibly/slower in a jeep anyway.

What’s your budget as that might have a lot to do with it?.

Pano roof can be a problem I’m sure but not in mine and it’s a nice option to have.

Thanks people, before I had E53 3.0d on 56 plate road tax was £530 per year ! I don’t want to be paying that sort of money for tax, my budget round about 15k on 2010 plate in white if possible M-sport with cream leathers

My 2010 40d is 290 tax per year, think its cheaper than the 30d but only slightly. I'm averaging 28.2mpg with mixed driving and mines also mapped to 360bhp, goes like the wind.

Not many around in your wanted combo, fingers crossed for you pal.

I've got a 2010 40d and I think my road tax is £290 (*edit* ah I can see above reply!)

I've also got a pano roof and it's been faultless in the 3 years I've had the car...but I am paying monthly for a BMW warranty

I paid £10250 for my 2010 x5 with a awsome spec, fbmwsh etc about 2 months ago so £15k should get you in a nice newer facelift model.

Re the pano roof
It’s a very nice to have option, however as said, it can be trouble
The trouble with the roofs, they are built with two tilting roofs, the mechanism wears and falls out of sync
There is a modification to make the roof trouble free that isolates the rear roof from the mechanism
I carried this out prior to having bother, I thought it was a good preventive measure, my front mechanism works fully and trouble free, I use it often! - For me, the pano roof is a must have option

I believe after the E chassis, Bmw reverted to single glass opening pano roofs to eliminate the problem

Thanks people for the advice I’ve heard the 40d twin turbo engine could go faulty as second engine, anyone come across that?

What do you mean by ‘faulty as second engine’?

No engine failures reported amongst those on here with them, and there’s more than a few, so it can’t be very common.

The engine that did have a problem was the N47 but that’s a 2-litre.

40d was the most reliable engine I have had so far in a BMW. Not a single thing claimed for under warranty (besides exhaust tips going a bit dull within a year). Not had to fix anything either, just standard maintenance in 6 years.

I’m a little late to this topic but 4.0 every time The smiles it brings more than makes up for the extra costs.

That’s reassuring after I’m having glow plug controller issues so soon after purchase. I found the N57 in my F10 the most reliable engine so far had it 4 years no issue apart from carbon build up and egr valve. 4.0d is the same engine but more power n57s so should be same.
