Stainless steel then...they are known to crack, had 7 cracks in my e53 one....found a good old fashioned cast one:

Think mine is cracked too.

Sometimes when I start it up from cold, I can see smoke/condensation coming from just behind the engine.

Thats what mine use to do.....so I would say you a cracked manifold.
