M50D BMW Winter Wheels

Post by max » Wed Nov 21, 2018 6:28 pm

Hi all

Is there an 'approved' set of BMW winter wheels to use with the M50D?
Are the brake calipers bigger, thus more clearance is needed or can any set that can be used on a 30D or 40D be used?

Thanks

Yes and yes,

BMW will happily sell you a suitable set of 20” wheels with snow tyres fitted, for a premium price!!

19” wheels do not fit the M50d due to the larger calliper and disc.

Ok, I may have been a bit quick off the mark there. A look on the BMW site says a 19” (£675 each! 20” start £1075 each)) is available if the car is not fitted with the M Performance Brakes. I’m not sure how you can tell if you have these or not.

Try running a VIN decoder against your car to see what build options come back? Bmwvin[dot]com is pretty good for this.

Realoem will also show options, though the BMW site will do as you know. Even the ones for my F46 are £2k a set on 17” (yes that’s tiny I know... )
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Thanks chaps
I'm considering 2 M50s, one has the 21" summer option and the other the regular 20" summer option. I don't think either car is upgraded with the M performance brakes (which are blue calipers on other BMW models, so I guess the same for the X5?)

I think I need to work out which set of BMW 19s will work as a winter option (if as you guys say they will clear the brakes). I won't be buying new at what they are charging so probably need to make sure all versions of 19s have the same offsets and I guess stagered set up the actual winter tyres

I did use the last seven of the vin on the BMW site, but judging by the fact it gave me the option of the 19” wheels even though I have the M Performance Brake kit, it’s not that clever. I’ll have a look at those other sites Richard 👍🏻

Hi Max,

I was told my car could take 19” wheels but found out today it can’t, ie the calliper is too big. It’s not blue but just the standard silver. Thankfully the place I got the wheels from are prepared to take them back but now need to look at 20” wheels or change the tyres on the existing rims.

So do I have the M Performance Brakes 🤷🏼‍♂️ I don’t know but I do know that 19” wheels don’t fit my car.

I have a set of F15 / F16 20" for sale in the buy and sell section delivery mileage wheels and tyres ( summer) may split the wheels and tyres. They have the RDCi valves style 469M.

That sounds like a very sensible idea, I’ll have a look tomorrow and report back.
