Got my rear arches painted and 21's fitted (e70)

Post by Leslie » Sat Nov 17, 2018 6:24 pm

After some delays managed to get my rear arches painted and refitted yesterday, the plastic rivets I bought were a really tight fit and had to take both wheels of in the end .
I never usually let the tyre fitter tighten my wheel nuts with the air gun prefer to do it myself but was a bit lazy and when I came to take them off even with an extending wrench I though the socket was going to explode ,must have been tightened to about 200nm ! Picked up a nice set of genuine style 215 alloys which make the car look a bit more modern , My m sport 20's are now away getting refurbed but have been slow to get done so just as well i had some other wheels to use. :D I put a little piece of carbon vinyl on the end of the side sill to hide the gravel rash for now should have just bit the bullet and got it painted too ...

Looks well. How do you find the ride compared to the 20's?

Are the 20's for sale?

Are you in NI??

Utterly stunning, just hasn't aged at all! I've got a 6 Series at the moment with 20"s on, and found that replacing the run flats with normal tyres made such a big difference to the ride. Common sense I appreciate, but the difference was far more than I expected.

Hi Lyons yes I'm in Norn Iron :D The 20's are eventually going to have winters fitted and swapped over each winter but I have a set of nearly new tyres that they came with to use first so will be holding onto them , gumtree and facebook are good for used alloys though you got to watch for cracked ones which are very common .They all seem to need refurb too and some of the prices being asked for even single alloys needing refurb are silly , see plenty for near £200 a wheel , some dreamers about . Also see several sets of these 215 style 21" alloys on ebay for 2k which is crazy ! Got lucky with these as they were not listed for an x5 .
These are runflats and tbh I don't notice a whole lot of difference compared to the 20's with normal tyres which surprised me but it's maybe more of an issue when it gets very cold .The ride is very acceptable to me anyway ,you get the odd squeak from plastic trim etc but nothing too bad.

Thanks pal :D yes they still look fresh for a quite old design of car ,out 11 years now ! These are on runflats now and I've a new set of non runflats bought and ready too go on as the tyres are getting low so will see if these is much difference but so far I haven't noticed a huge difference from the 20's with normal tyres which surprised me , its more the cost issue of runflats for me , in 21's the price is quite high and very few make tyres in these sizes.

Very good, I’m between Hillsborough and Banbridge myself.

I went to portadown last week to get a set of Style 336’s which turned out to be reps.

I’m heading over to one of my sites on Thursday on the boat and combining it with a mini road trip to Glasgow to collect a set of wheels while I’m over.

Better pack light then a set of wheels fills the whole boot and you need the seats folded down as well and 2 had to be stacked to close the Bootlid :D happy hunting !

Stone chips on rear arches already so got plastic on the front half of the rear arches today to try and stop it getting ruined as after on 1000 miles the passenger lower arch had many many minor chips, the plastic goes up to where the curves of the door stops .Its thicker than normal vinyl and was an off cut he had from a rally car and wasn't too easy to fit due to the thickness and the arches curve in several directions so has the odd minor bubble.
Back on the newly referred 20's for the winter with new genuine centre caps a and they don't look half as good as the 215 style 21's though !
Car only washed yesterday afternoon and the state of it again lol  and the vinyl I put on the sill end has fallen off on drivers side already
