Sprocket to Camshaft N62 4.4l

Post by Rick G » Fri Nov 16, 2018 3:53 am

Well here I am again with a question that I hope has a sane answer.
How does the sprocket bolt onto the camshaft and hold it's position. From what I can see there seems to be no key, pin or spline and all that holds it in place is the bolt being done up to a zillion ft/lbs :?

Can’t comment on your engine but came across this on a Ford (excuse the bad language) and found it a pita to do, as you got to the torque the sprocket moved, so you offset it back and hope when you reach the torque it will have moved to the right place. After a million goes you get it right. There’s probably a very simple answer but obviously neither of us two know it.

Thanks Henry it seems that this is correct as I have spoken to a reliable source here and he backs up what I have figured and what you have said and there certainly is no way that there is any sort of locating dowel or keyway. I had seen the holes in the end behind the sprocket in the centre of the shaft and assumed that they were for that purpose but apparently they are for the oil feed to the VANOS system. We live and learn :worshipbmw:

I have just had this confirmed on the Bimmerforums you just tighten the bolt to the specified torque and all should be OK and if you have two of them keep them crossed.
