Low down torque of 4.0d
Low down torque of 4.0d
I’m getting used to driving the X5 now I’ve had it for 2 weeks I’ve only driven it a few times due to having insurance put on and making sure the service is done and all is ok.
Anyway I find there is a lot of low down torque or turbo at low speeds. I normally drive a 6 cylinder 3.0d F10 which basically cruises up to speed and I don’t notice the grunt at all. It’s as though the X5 needs the 2000 plus revs and low down turbo to get it going. I have driven another 4.0d but never paid attention to this at the time at the test drive.
Is this what you guys find? I’m not complaining as I like to make fast progress but sometimes you want to just slowly speed up from standstill and not have to experience too much turbo at low speeds.

Re: Low down torque of 4.0d
Not noticed it on mine but I use light throttle and feed it when I need it. It doesn’t take much to get it shifting though. The speed limit can go past embarrassingly quickly sometimes!
Has yours been remapped by any chance?

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Low down torque of 4.0d
Would it not be the smaller turbo helping out?
I’ve just come from a 530d F10 to my now remapped 40d and it does shift nicely from lower revs.

How can I find out? Dealer wouldn’t tell me anyway.
Someone suggested a reset on Carly. Maybe previous owner was a sportier driver than me and it hangs on to low gears more.if that’s case it probably learn my style soon.

Did you find that your F10 got to speed with less noise and turbo and only got torque when you actually floored it. But with the 4.0d I find it’s needs to have that torque to get off.
I’m driving both on a daily basis back to back and it just seems weird.
I love the handling of the X5, the sitting position( feel like sitting on the floor with the F10) once you been out in the X5.
The mpg is around 25 cf to 32 with F10 a I do lots of short runs.
Did a once week motorway blast today to get dpf reg to 12g soot mass. Was 42g yesterday.
My F10 is crying out for a regen as it not had it weekly stroll on the motorway.

I’ll see if I can do an audio file or a video. Maybe it’s just me getting used to it.

Re: Low down torque of 4.0d
Yeah it does seem to take more effort to get moving but you do know you’re driving a big lump and it amazes me how quickly it gets going and up to high speed.
Had some duel carriage way fun last week with an Impreza who couldn’t shake me off. Obviously I don’t know what he had under the bonnet apart from a turbo but I kept on his arse (at a safe distance) every time the traffic cleared and off we went.

I know what your saying with it being a big car and that. But it’s faster than my 5er as the 0-60 is 6.6s compared to around 7s for mine(525d) but the 5er feels faster somehow. I can’t put a finger on it.. seems weird...

Re: Low down torque of 4.0d
I notice mine is keen (sd but similar engine to 40d ) to hold the revs above 2k going up a hill but otherwise it changes up at 2k or less on a light throttle and a slight lift of when in 5th has it in 6th gear when it would otherwise just hold onto 5th. I suspect it holds gears longer if trying to do a regen
Re: Low down torque of 4.0d
When i go from my x5 to my 320d that seems faster less effort but i put it down to being lower to the ground

That's exactly what I'm experiencing with my 40d. Would be interested to compare couple of cars with the same engine. I test drove several 35d and 30d and haven't noticed this. I have to change the glow plug controller and somehow I though it might be related (not sure how tho).

Yep I have the glow plug error too.
But I thought that has something to do with warming up and ignitions
