Dipstick

Post by henrym3 » Tue Oct 23, 2018 5:56 pm

While fiddling underneath I’ve found two oil leaks, easy fix on power steering one but has anyone changed the "o" ring seal on dipstick without major surgery to get to it.

Should be pretty straight forward, the dipstick has a bracket bolted to the intake manifold, then  you just pull it out and change the 'O' ring.....put it back in and give it a tap to make sure its home.

Unfortunately it has ”U" piece bolted at the bottom of the dipstick to hold it in place and I can’t get at the screw. If I had another joint between my elbow and wrist I might just manage to get it undone?

The dipstick fix will be easy now, having dropped the sump I find it has a fair amount of plastic bits >:( so job has grown somewhat.

With the sump off and looking up at the bottom of the engine (as you do) I notice that there is a piece of plastic stuck in the suction pipe intake grill. So remove suction pipe for closer inspectionImage
There must be some serious suction to bend that grill and allow that plastic in and lodge. New suction pipe I think.

Seeing as I decided to get a new suction pipe I thought I’d take the old to bits. Didn’t expect this.

If the bits are a sort of tan colour,  I would be checking my cam chain blades

I was just thinking the same.  That colour plastic and a V8 engine is not a good sign.

Thank goodness the suction pipe filter did its job.  That could have been scary, and all because of a leaking dipstick.  Someone up there cares  :)

30k since my engine rebuild and still I get an uneasy feeling about those damn plastic guides. Even though I fitted a pre-oiler system to ensure full oil pressure before engine start to try and help them.

When they stripped the engine the strainer was 80% clogged with sludge and pieces of guide which we believe caused the pump to fail. Looks like you have some work on your hands, good luck hope there is no more surprises.
