Good morning All
I bit the bullet and bought an E53 on Friday it's a; 54 plate, 3.0d sport, black, beige leather interior, 114K miles, I feel a good condition for it's age.
Having driven it now for the weekend, and emptied my bank account of funds to support BP, I have started to notice some minor problems with the car. I'm sure in the weeks to come I will be posting a lot in the forums for advice and help as I must be honest, I know very little about X5s.
Thank you for having me

Hi Edward RW
Welcome and I hope you continue to like you E53.
I bought mine earlier this year and it is the first car for many years that I want to drive home the long way.
If you are feeling the pinch with a diesel then try a petrol E53. I know V8s are even worse but I'm averaging 16.4mpg currently.
The only thing mine won't pass is a petrol station.
I have no end of help from the wonderful people on the forum top get mine on the road.
Looking forward to seeing some pictures of yours.

Re: Newbie E53 Owner
Hello & welcome.....
My advice is.......
1. Try not to get too attached to the vehicle yet.
2. Carefully evaluate the whole vehicle, consider using a code reader &/or get someone knowedgable to check it over (my buyers guide may give an idea re SOME items to check).
3. Do the maths....How much you paid, need to pay to sort everything vs likely private sale value if fully sorted..... Once numbers crunched ask yourself it it worth keeping or better to sell as it is.
Hopefully the matters you regard as "minor issues" can be sorted for "minor cost"

Re: Newbie E53 Owner
Welcome , a few problems are to be expected at that age ,hopefully nothing too serious , I just got an e70 x5 and with my lightest slippers on the gas pedal and a longer type run I can JUST squeeze 30 mpg (usually 27 so far ) and Id expect the e53 to be a bit lower than that ,if you don't do too many miles they it shouldn't be a problem . The old m57 diesel engine is virtually bombproof if serviced regularly.
Re: Newbie E53 Owner
Welcome Edward,
Its my first X5 and I confess it is a revelation at E53 level.
The car can be a black hole where money is concerned, but read the threads if you like doing the work yourself. As mentioned some sort of code reader and reset will pay for itself over time. I had an LPG conversion with the car showing 20.4mpg and LPG at 52.7p / litre (ASDA Garthdee) so I am very happy with the consumption and I imagine my neighbours love sharing the noise...…
