Mudflaps

First time on this site and I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer.
Have just took the plunge and traded my 2009 3.0d M Sport in for a new 4.0d M Sport. However I did notice that the rear end my current car gets absolutely pitted with dirt and muck when the roads are wet.

Have enquired about mud flaps and was told by my local dealer that they cost Â£190 to buy and will cost around Â£400 to fit. I think this is a bit steep for mud flaps!

Does anyone think it is worth fitting them anyway?

And if I do decide to buy them does anyone know if I can purchase them cheaper elsewhere?

Sounds wayyyyyyyyyyy too expensive. My car has mudflaps and the dealer fitted them as part of their prep for sale, it was a used car. They are pretty big but can't imagine the cost to buy is as much as that and that cost to fit is astronomical, they just screw on, probably an hours labour at most. I would get a price from another dealer and then go back to your dealer with that comparison.

BTW the back still gets pretty dirty !

That labour charge sounds way off the mark! I think my Dealer in Bedford charges about Â£140 an hour and I can't see it taking half-a-day to fit four flaps.

Like others have said, the flaps do reduce the spray and muck on the back of the car, but they don't stop it. Our E53 and E71 still get dirty, just not as badly as without.

I've caught a glimpse before of a M sport fitted with mud flaps. I might be wrong but I think the official life was, not suitable for M sport. They clearly fit though. Sometimes BMW GB/Germany make bizarre statements and quote bizarre fitting times.

They fit perfectly well, they are massive, especially the front ones but do give a level of protection and cleanliness.

I have had mud flaps fitted to my 40d M they are pretty expensive, had them fitted by my local body-shop. As per the BMW instructions to fit the rear flaps on the M sport you have to notch a piece out of the rear bumper so if you have them fitted they're on for good. I'm hoping they will reduce stone chip damage. I'm sure the BMW instructions state around 2 hours for fitting time.

Nice looking car btw.

Guess if they have to trim the rear bumper that could add up to a bit of time. My dealer fitted them even before I saw the car so I didn't have any choice but would have been asking for them to be fitted if they hadn't been there.

@davyk31 - Yes very nice car !! Post more pics when you get a chance! I thought seriously about going for silver on mine, but eventually settled for Deep Sea Blue.

Very interesting that the dealer actually went to the trouble of fitting before selling - I'd have thought they'd have wanted to avoid the cost. I wonder if this is to avoid any potential stone chip warranty claims?

@bayrak - sorry to hear you've been suffering with the stone chipping. I raised the issue with the dealer supplying my car, who told me this had been an issue on earlier X5s, but that changes had since been made and it was no longer an issue. As you've got the LCI version, I guess that's all rubbish! Did you try the protective film route at all or did you want something to reduce all the build up as well?

Yes wasn't really sure why the dealer would go to the trouble of fitting the mudflaps. The car is affected already by stone chips, perhaps they didn't want it getting any worse. I do know someone else was interested in the car before I looked at it, perhaps he commited to it and asked for flaps and then changed his mind. He apparently then bought a brand new one so perhaps they let him off. Who knows, but glad they are there and I love the silver. My previous X5 was LeMans blue so this was a nice change.

Thanks to all for your replies and advice. I said no to the dealer and he replied by saying he could now do them fully fitted for Â£312!

Still not sure.

The mudflaps do look quite big, but the colour of my new car is black so maybe they would look fine

I would go for it, because they are big they do cut down the stone chips along the sides of the cars and not just in the areas badly affected by chipping on X5M. And stone chips on a black car I imagine show up white so you want as few as possible. Offer him Â£250 and tell him thats still plenty of cash for the job especially given you are spending Â£55k plus.
