NEW MAF SENSOR FITTED E53 4.4

Post by X5Andym » Mon Aug 20, 2018 5:06 pm

Hi Back again.. sorry MAF sensor.. after waiting two week for euro parts to deriver my new MAF sensor, for my 2005 E53 4.4, which I change this afternoon..

Is there any thing I need to reset.

The reason sensor change was engine stalled sometimes when stopped at traffic lights, when I put the car in neutral then misfiring across  the ports/cylinders when I try to restart the car..?? turn off try again restart seems fine,  more detail on E53 general forum.

I did go for run round the block in the car about 2 miles just to see if all is ok ?, seems ok..  but when I put the car in park and neutral, put my foot on the gas.. only 1000 revs held it there, then the  revs drop off and went back up with out me moving my foot on the peddle by its shef.. is there still something wrong.. or I am looking for problems..

Thank you very much.

Cheers

Andy

What made you change the MAF ?, Did you use live diagnostics ??

Hi Marti

No I did not.. have a live diagnostics.. all the systems low fuel economy per gallon, misfiring when start up.. after engine stalling.. went on the forum.. all pointed to the MAF sensor, as the car is 2005 with only 370000 mile on the clock.. I have been changing some of the parts which may have not been changed since new.. spark plugs, HT coils and fuel filter.. just want to make car better, so the MAF sensor.. was the next fix which I hope solves the stalling problem with the fuel air mix

Thank you

Cheers

Hi

Brought a streetwise OBD II scan tool this morning run a diagnostic test; findings as below; I am no mechanic so this means nothing to me; am I ok to drive the car with these faults; are the faults easy to fix and expensive.. not sure what the difference is between faults and pending as four are the same.

Faults 6, as below

1. P0343; camshaft position sensor A - bank 1 circuit high input

2. P0390; camshaft position sensor B - bank 2 circuit malfunction

3. O0024; camshaft position actuator B - bank 2 timing over-advanced

4. P0021; camshaft position actuator A - bank 2 timing over-advanced

5. P0347; camshaft position sensor A - bank 2 circuit low input

6. P0011; camshaft position actuator A - bank 1 timing over-advanced

Pending 4, as below

1. P0024; camshaft position actuator B - bank 2 timing over-advanced

2. P0021; camshaft position actuator A - bank 2 timing over-advanced

3. P0347; camshaft position sensor A - bank 2 circuit low input

4. P0011; camshaft position actuator A - bank 1 timing over-advanced

Any help and advise ill be much appreciated..

Thank you very much

Cheers

Hi

I had very similar symptoms in my E39 back in the days. It was like that when I bought it from my friends. At the time I knew very little about E39 and they were told by the mechanic that it's because they only drive it once in a long while. They told me the same when I could not start the car straight away for the test drive. I believed my friends who believed their friend.

When it got worse I went to read error codes and OMG I had two cam sensors and crank sensor faulty. Replaced them with parts from the dealer (very expensive, 100 quid each at the time). The problem was gone for a short while then came back. I sold the car.

Later I found out that this particular engine in my car (M52B25) had a problem with the timing chain - when stretch a bit over time it was causing startup problems, misfires, dropping revs, it could even stop whilst driving, and it was only showing on diagnostics as the sensor fault. At least that is what a wise mechanic told me. I wonder now if it could be simply a tensioner fault. I do know that chain may stretch a little bit over time but on some cars/engines it does it far more quicker than it should (mine did). Anyhow it was not the sensor problem at all.

I'm not sure if your 4.4 has he same problems now but who knows. It's better to check for the peace of mind.

Have you cleared all the codes and taken it for a drive. These codes may be leftovers from the misfires

When you say it won’t start, does it turn over. Do the lights dim or go out when you turn the key. A lot of those faults refer to low voltage to sensors and history suggests a poor battery throws all sorts of faults including trans fail safe.

As Henry has mentioned....voltage...the battery on the beasts has to be tip top and 'Trans fail safe ' always pops up when the battery is in a poor state.....hence a non start

Im assuming its sorted by now but just for ref for ppl reading this, I had a MAF replacement and I was told by the German car specialist who fitted it the ecu had to be reprogrammed due to the new version of the MAF sensor as its different to the original one BMW used. Its upgraded aparently but I now have full power and is driving very nice now. 2003 X5D 3ltr btw
