Door cards

The rear doors I acquired did not have airbags, mine do and I want to retain them. How do I get the metal frame in the pic of another door card I have. Is that yellow stuff some form of glue and will it melt with heat without destroying the rest of the door card. Can’t find them on Real OEM.

Looks like some sort of hot glue?  As in if you heat it to about 130°C and it may well go runny.  Can’t be too much hotter than that or the plastic will melt.

I’d check my if the airbags are interchangeable between door cards first
In that, will the doorcard allow inflation without sending shrapnel flying in the event of need ?

Wow, 130c that’s hot, I’ll give it a go though. As to airbags being interchangeable, that bracket is the same for front and rear. The door card that hasn’t got it fitted is marked up for it to be fitted, so I am assuming the vehicle didn’t have that option box ticked. I appreciate one should never assume anything.
When I remove it I will need to check if the area behind the sponge, ie the door card has a cut out or is relieved in some way to let the bag out. I appreciate what your saying though.

My diy hot melt glue guns run at 120-130°C.  Commercial glues may run even hotter as it depends upon the glue type.

So, removed the bits that surround the air bag, not that difficult but, as you can see that black plastic piece holds the leather piece of the door card which blows out should the air bag go off. The door card fitted atm is a one piece of leather which wouldn’t allow the airbag to blow without causing lots of shrapnel as suggested by snrbrtsn. My choices are which door card to modify. I admit to being greedy and wanting both airbags and the blinds.

Door card back on with airbag leather center piece having been changed. So in the end managed to keep the curtains and the airbags. Had to buy a Heatgun, good bit of kit.

Thank you guys, one always likes a bit of back patting. Think I’ll retire now before I break something.

You can’t retire just yet, you’ve still the airbag plastic cover to fit to the door card  :P
