Harsh Downchange
Re: Harsh Downchange
Took the car out lastnite, found that the clutch slip between 1500-2000 rpm does not occur when the car has cruise control on. i am going to have the oil change done on the box, if this does not cure or make it better, I better get used to the fact it will require a box rebuild, but is this deffernetly gonna cure all the problems I have.
Does anyone know a reliable gearbox specialist?

Are you thinking of attempting this yourself by any chance?

Someone did confirm the Oil to use on the old forum but I can't remember what it was sorry. You would be best taking it to someone who has proven experience with these boxes before and have them supply, service, and gurantee the work.

I have the lurch issue pretty bad. Had software update, remap, gearbox oil change and some guess but I still have the lurch, and it's real nasty only thing that spoils having this lovely motor.
If I was you I would take it down to Jason, the gearbox oil is pricey believe it's now over £100 plus I think Jason would get it cheaper then you buying it.

Re: Harsh Downchange
So i take it i should let Jason take look at the car & carry out the repair's. Would a full gearbox rebuild solve the problem i have?

Re: Harsh Downchange
I would let him make his judgement on it. You might not have to do a full re-build - Just an oil change and Software update.

Did you get a software update? Did it fix your gear change?
Thanks,
W.

Re: Harsh Downchange
Hi,
First post here having discovered the site via the Xoutpost forum. I have an '05, E53 3.0D Sport Auto.
Thought I would feed in some data about my experiences following a transmission failure earlier this year.
In my case I suddenly had lurching in 2nd moving in slow traffic one afternoon and then without warning the transmission locked in 3rd. There were no warning lights or errors flagged!
Having got home I heard some nasty noises from underneath and so took the car out kf service immediately and had it recovered to the nearest BMW dealership. The upshot was that clutch packs B and D were shot and BMW wanted £7',000 to replace the transmission!!! Rebuilt ZF 6sp boxes are around £5k + fitting +VAT. The failure mileage was 42,000 and BMW GB were not interested in goodwill. I have Warranty Direct 'Luxury Car' cover and they recovered the vehicle to their specialist in Bedfordshire for work.
It turned out to be a cheap plastic part fitted to the Sprag Clutch in the torque converter had failed and the debris caused the high pressure oil pump to fail. The consequential damage downstream was horrendous. The rebuild comprised new TC, oil pump, filter and major overhaul kit. Having talked at length to the rebuilder, this failure mode is not uncommon, and he sees a lot of these gearboxes (not just in BMW's).
The rebuild cost £2,275 (parts +18 hours labour). My contribution was a mere £50, thank you WD. If you need a new Mechatronics module then that will add approx £1200 to your misery. I had to have one fitted a few weeks later as it had been damged too.
If you are experiencing odd gearbox behaviour then the advise I received was do not drive any further and get it looked at. When mine was recovered, all drive had been lost as the system was cold. Failures are rare at my low mileage, but they are becoming more common on older models.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Harsh Downchange
Sorry in late reply going to see Jason today as visiting my parents, got married last weekend so have not had time, As for the last poster thanks for your input but the harsh gearchange is only on down change & when driven yesterday to mot test station i found it does not do it in sports mode of manual shift. I know this is a common problem but all i want is a fix, my concern is i am fed up of trying stuff just a fix would do.

Re: Harsh Downchange
I had a simular issue, went to see Jason has the X5 gearbox and Engine software upgraded to the latest version and hay presto it's been fine ever since.
Re: Harsh Downchange
How long ago did you have the update & what was the cost & how long did it take?
(I have been trying to get down to jason for a while, will try soon)
Thanks in advance
