N/S front tyre wearing on outside edge

Post by Chrispy » Thu Aug 09, 2018 9:51 am

Spotted the other day, quite heavy wear on the N/S front tyre outside edge, whereas across the rest of the tread is quite healthy - like I've been doing nothing but go round roundabouts really fast for hours on end...
The O/S tyre in comparison is wearing evenly across and the rears are ok with just the usual feathering on the inside edges as expected based on the camber.

Can the front camber be altered to counter this or am I talking worn bushes etc?  I doubt it's track rod end adjustment due to the way it's wearing.

Thanks,

Chris.

Worn bushes will normally induce negative camber, there is a very small amount of camber adjustment at the front with elongated holes at the strut top. I would be surprised if they weren’t already set at minimum camber. If the wear is one side only I would lean towards toe adjustment on that side, a 4 wheel alignment is the way forward. That is of course if there is no other faults, ie is the vehicle sitting level, doesn’t have one air bag more inflated than the other. Is your steering wheel perfectly square to the road.

As an added thought, if you are getting an alignment done get the rear toe reduced to the minimum BMW spec to stop the rear tyres feathering.

Cheers for the reply.  BMW want £149 for a 4WA so I'll get it booked in me thinks - considering the fronts alone are £170 each, I don't want to be replacing tyres as a result of premature wear really. And I'll ask them to sort out the rear camber whilst they're at it :)

Just the standard 19" Bridgestone Dueller HP Sport * marked RFT 's........

The rears are £180 a pop as they're wider on the staggered setup :( ......

You should expect to pay between £800 & £1,200 a set for 20” RFT tyres on either an E70 or E71 if using the ‘*’ marked tyres, though prices can vary with current demand and oil prices.

My dunlops are £220 fronts and £250 rears so yours are cheap, mind you mine are 20” versions and all pressured currently at 39psi to stop the edges wearing!

FWIW I had similar, outside shoulders on 20" Bridgestone Dueller RFT fronts wearing away.  I had mine changed as per the attached image Image and have managed 15,000 miles with even wear since.

I think the main change was to get that third setting (toe) as close to 0 as possible.  As this is outside of BMW recommendations I'm not sure if they will do it for you.

Check alignmycar.co.uk for someone local with the Hunter alignment kit that will be much cheaper than BMW and work with you on reducing the shoulder wear.

My rear inners are worn now mind so I'm looking at getting that checked soon.

Well it's currently booked in with BMW Doncaster to have the 4WA done next week...... Not sure where else does a Hunter 4WA around me.  Will need to look.

In terms of pressure if the fronts were slightly deflated I'd expect wear on the inner and outer edges but this is outer edge only so it has to be toe. O/S is fine as it happens and inner wear on the rears is minimal.

EDIT - Now booked in with an independent Hunter place near me on Thursday this week.  Very knowledgeable on the phone, cheaper and more "whilst you wait".  Dealer was typical response when I tried to quiz them about the nature of the alterations.

I'll take in the photo you posted above to show them :)

Yeah. Had poly bushes fitted to the thrust Arms whilst it was in as the originals were shot - stomp on the brakes at low speed and you could see the suspension bump forwards and back again. Now feels like a new car to drive, the difference was noticeable immediately setting off home afterwards. The chaps at the place I took it did an excellent job.

Mine has worn the same, can I swap the front wheels over to save wearing the one out completely before the other?  Thanks
